EA's Earth and Beyond MMOG To Shut Down
Zonk writes "The announcement came down yesterday that Electronic Arts' space-based massively multiplayer online game Earth and Beyond is to close this September. There is a detailed official FAQ page regarding the transition to 'Sunset', including dates, content additions, and information about billing. Commentary can be found via Terra Nova and over on Waterthread. Sigh... another one bites the dust."
This makes me think of the time a few months ago when I wanted to by a PS2 memory card. I went to a nearby EB and got in line at the counter. Of course, being EB, the person at the front of the line was returning a bunch of games, buying other ones, getting some of the difference put on his eb card and refinancing his mortgage. There were about 8 people in line in total, and with two EB people behind the counter, this should have been a short wait. Unfortunately, one of the people was dutifully price tagging a stack of Earth and Beyond boxes to the low low price of 9.99. I waited 15 minutes to buy a card, but managed to hold my composure and not act too angrily towards the EB people when I was finally given the privilege of buying something. Of course, next week I was at Futureshop and they had two memory cards for only 10 dollars more than what I eventually paid at EB. Makes me wonder why I continue to shop there.
Trust me, if I got into a games-only store, it has to be EB. Gamestop and it's ilk are much, much worse. You can't enter their general vicinity without being accosted by imbiciles demanding that you reserve games you have no interest in, and practically demanding they come to your house and rape all the used games from your shelves.
I learned a long time ago that whenever I buy games anymore at a retail outlet, it's got to be a non-game-centric establishment like Target, or ToysRUs. At least at these places they don't have as heavy of gamer audiences and generally have titles I'm looking for in stock (instead of feigning the rediculous "sorry, we're all out. Should have preordered!" type-bullshit).
