Rhythmbox Gets iPod Support

Bhondai writes "The latest release of the popular GNOME based iTunes clone, Rhythmbox has, amongst new features, initial support for the iPod. Things are still a little unpolished at this moment (requiring manual mounting of the iPod to /mnt/ipod), but this does look promising. A list of changes and new features in Rhythmbox 0.7.1 is available at Footnotes."

Your life would be a lot easier if you just used MP3 in the first place.

I recently made the switch from Mac OS X to linux, and the one app I thought I might miss was iTunes. This looks like a good alternative, especialy for those like me who dont mind (maybe even enjoy?) using the terminal to do something as simple as mount the iPod. I hope to give this a shot as soon as I'm done setting up my new (Gentoo) linux installation. that will ahve to wait though, I havent even had time to get a decent browser yet (I'm writing this in links!!) linux rules

compared to mac os x browsers, believe me... there's no such thing as a "decent browser" for linux.

Given that there number of consumer devices which support ogg is low, and that conversion to mp3 from ogg further degrades the sound quality, is there any good reason to keep your files in that format?

Just a question, not a troll.

  7. ipod sucks by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Troll

it doesnt even perform its main function well. if you fill up a 40gb ipod it will perform like a snail, taking 15 seconds just to load the list into memory for browsing. 5 second freezes on menu access or menu change are not uncommon. during this time when the ipod is totally frozen and whirring, it will queue any keypresses - so if you are navigating a menu, and are not familiar with the brutal latency, expect to go all over the place until EVERYTHING is loaded into ram.

apple sucks too. they crippled the ipod with retarded drm. ipod would have been a lot better if it were possible to truly use it as a portable hard drive/mp3 player. but no, even though you can mount the ipod as a hdd and copy music to it easily, unless you have apple's 3409283094320 services running and copy via GEARSEC, nothing you copy is playable by the firmware. and their shitbag attempt to disguise the nature of the drm with weasel-words like 'configuring' (which really means 'formatting for one and only one computer') just makes it worse. just what does apple think would be the effect if everyone could copy music as they wished to and from an ipod with the only middleman software being the OS layer? is any less itunes music being pirated today because of this brilliant decision to hamper the consumer?
