Why Programming Still Stinks

Andrew Leonard writes "Scott Rosenberg has a column on Salon today about a conference held in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the publishing of 'Programmers at Work.' Among the panelists saying interesting things about the state of programing today are Andy Hertzfeld, Charles Simonyi, Jaron Lanier, and Jef Raskin."

    Perhaps linear, logical, engineering geek-types are the wrong type of people for the job. We haven't made the computers smart enough so the people with real design skills can use them properly.

    Programming sucks because languages suck. Programs suck because languages suck.

    every programmer has their own toolkit. Code that they wrote themselves to accomplish routine tasks. Every time they learn a new language the first thing they do is to translate their library.

    What a collasal waste of time and effort. The only real exception to that rule are PERL programmers who have a wonderful tool like CPAN. All perl programmers know to look there first to see if somebody else has done it before.

    Every language needs a CPAN.
