Microsoft WiX Code Released to SourceForge.Net

nberardi writes "On Monday, April 5, 2004, as part of the Shared Source Initiative, Microsoft released the source code for the Windows Installer XML (WiX) developer tool to SourceForge under the IBM Common Public License or CPL. The WiX project is the first Shared Source Initiative to go "public" on Source Forge rather than a Microsoft site. It is also the first to use an externally created Open Source license. Microsoft supports the idea that a software developer should be free to choose how they license their work and for the goals of WiX, the CPL was the right fit. Is this another ploy from Microsoft to not look like the bad guy, or do you think they are embracing on the Open Source movement?" Slashdot and SourceForge are both part of OSDN.

I am a user of Linux. I am also very bitter. I hate the fact that all the guys who got to fuck the hot girls used Windows XP. It just doesn't make sense to me? Wouldn't all the hot girls be like "Sure, this d00d is hot, but he uses windows. that really turns me off", and then they'd find me and be like "sweet, he is open-minded, he uses linux. let's make each other scream and moan.". But that doesn't happen. It's a fucked up word we live, eh? Windows guys are such jerks. Linux users are kinder and more affectionate. We read so much about sex because that's the closest we can get, we must be sex geniuses, right? Damn, I really wish I had a hot girl. I mean, ever had that storm in your brain...every single neuron in your brain fires like crazy.. that ass so finely shapped, smooth legs, the breasts sticking out, seeing the shape of her nipple through her tight fitting tshirt. i can't have that? but i am a linux user. why don't they see that in me? i am better!!

What is the purpose of modding funny posts down as overrated? If humor is not your kind of thing, just set a negative penalty on "funny" in your preferences. You might say "but it's not THAT funny" or "it's not MY kind of humor", but if you take a good look you see that the vast majority of "funny" posts have also been modded as "overrated". Maybe Over/Underrated moderations should also be meta-moderated?

Btw, anyone knows if -1,Overrated on a +N,Funny comment decreases karma? (since Funny doesn't increase it)

      I believe it does.

You'd think it'd be pretty simple to make a system whereby negative mods didn't take away karma when the positive mod didn't add any, but I seriously doubt Slashdot has any such thing. After all, they can't even display accented characters...

  9. Yes. Karma does increase. And no, they dont care. by Dark+Lord+Seth · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Actually, YES. It does. Having something modded up as "Funny" gains you no karma whatsoever. However, if the same thing is modded down again, you DO lose karma. Is it unfair? I guess so, so I decided to report this as a bug. However, the developer's response so far has been... odd, at best. I do think that is not the right way to treat one's userbase/bug checkers. On a good note, this might just get me on some editor's "Shit list"... Which would be cute, in a really weird way... Nevermind that.

Funny you start about this so shortly after I file a bug report on this... Read my bio too, it also contains a nice little rant about people who mod "n+, Funny" comments down. To be honest, the whole damned moderation system could use a good overhaul; "Underrated" and "Overrated" are not open for metamoderation. About a month ago I had Excellent karma. Loads of +4 or +5 "Funny" posts later, I end up with positive, almost all posts modded down 2 or 3 points by using "Overrated".

Well, the reason why it won't be fixed is because they have something against funny comments. Taco whined about how he didn't think funny comments were funny for the longest time, and then he switched the metamod to be harsher on funny comments, and then funny comments no longer get the author any karma ... of course, he could just set his options to give a -5 to funny comments, but for some reason he thinks that his opinions should be pushed onto everybody else.
