LucasArts Pioneer Discusses Classic Games

neonstz writes "David Fox, co-author of Rescue on Fractalus, Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken And The Alien Mindbenders, visited The Gathering demo-party in Norway this easter. He gave a nice on-site presentation, unfortunately not available online, about the early days of Lucasfilm Games (now known as LucasArts) and Rescue on Fractalus, but there's also a lengthy interview with Fox on the official Gathering site, discussing his own games and game development in general."

He seemed to dodge the question about Sam & Max 2 in the interview, but I bet he's damn well pissed that Lucasarts cancelled it, too.

Put the game back on schedule, damn it!

Nah, they were going to do it in 3D. They seem to ruin their games when they go 3D. Just look at the Monkey Island series. Many of the puzzles were too easy to solve in the 4th one (hey buddy, it's not like I ever completed Riven or anything...I'm just saying). ;)

So the puzzles were easier to solve because of the extra dimension?

Admittedly, the 3D made EMI look crap, tacky and without atmosphere, but Sam & Max was actually looking pretty good if you check out the more recent screens.

No, I just got the impression that they spent more time making the thing 3D than they did creating an engaging set of puzzles.

Those oldschool Lucasfilm adventures were truly great. From "Labyrinth" (based off the old movie with David Bowie) to "Maniac Mansion" (a true classic) and "ZacMcKraken" (took me about 6 hours to complete).

I played all of these on a Commodore 64 back in the day. Completed all three of them. And who can forget the Green Tentacle?

All memorable highlights of my misspent game playing youth ;) The C64 didn't have the Sierra Police and Space Quests, but the Lucas games were the next best thing.

If you haven't played these adventures yet, GET THEE TO A C64 EMULATOR! NOW!

No need for a C64 emulator for Maniac Mansion or Zac McKraken at least. MM was available for a lot of different platforms, including DOS and the original NES.

I propose that we, the fans of Sam & Max, and all adventure games alike, join forces, and bombard the Lucasarts.com forums with topics about Sam & Max. We need to get the message across to Lucasarts in every way possible, and with they're forums in a state of chaos, they are sure to take notice. Let's save the adventure game genre from extinction.
