iPod Mini Hits The 'Sweet Spot'?

Tooky writes "The BBC is reporting on a survey carried out by Jupiter Research which found that most consumers were only storing about 1000 songs on their portable MP3 players, claiming that ' The finding seems to be borne out by the demand for Apple's Mini iPod'." According to the piece: "Jupiter said digital music players with capacities of 5,000 songs will provide too much space for most people. It added that consumers rate other features as highly as the ability to store all the songs held on their PC."

    What good is all of this hard drive space if the iPod mini loses access to data stored on its internal hard drive?

    Dude, I ordered one for my GFs birthday and three weeks afterwards she still doesn't have it. I'm getting KIND OF PISSED OFF with /. printing all this good press and making it EVEN HARDER to get! WHEN WILL THEY GET IT THROUGH THEIR THICK HEADS THAT I WANT TO SEE BAD PRESS so my GF will get her mini and start letting me have som lovin'. I WILL KEEP using random CAPITALIZATION until you listen to me damnit! Stop printing good stuff NOW!

    BTW, she wanted pink. If that's the most popular color I'm gonna jump off a bridge.

    "I" am "them" as is my father, my mother and every I know who refuses to buy HDTV until everyone else has it. YOU are assuming this "study" is correct, unbiased and even somewhat logical.

    People don't buy cars that get 55 miles to the gallon but only have 1 gallon of fuel storage. They buy cars that get 15 miles to the gallon and have 30 gallons of storage.

    All this study shows is that people are still utterly clueless about technology, what the terminology is and what will be possible six months from now. Period.

    I was going to buy an iPod, but it's basically an expensive, disposable brick. Forget it. My player of choice is the Archos FM Recorder with Rockbox on it. It's reasonably small, sturdy, and it contains a 20 gig drive. The official Archos OS sucks ass, but Rockbox is ultra-fast, easy to use, and open-source to boot, which means I can write my own plugins (well, in theory). It comes with games, playlist editors, a text viewer, etc. There's no way iPod will ever be able to match that, especially considering the ~$120 price tag on eBay for Archos. Archos also makes a player called gMini 220, which has a neater form factor and a CF slot, but Rockbox is not available for it, and Archos's default OS sucks, so I can't recommend it.
