Daniel Robbins Resigns As Chief Gentoo Architect

bdowne01 writes "Gentoo Linux has experienced rapid growth in the past year--much to the credit of Daniel Robbins, the founder and Chief Architect of the project. Earlier today, he announced his resignation from his role on the gentoo-nfp mailing list." Tester adds "But before leaving, he has set up a non-profit foundation that will own all of the copyrights to Gentoo. The initial board of trustees will be appointed by Daniel, but next year they will be elected. The membership of the foundation will be open." Reader burnitall points out a note on the Gentoo homepage reading "... We are extremely sad to see Daniel Robbins depart, and we both wish him the best in his new endeavors and promise that the door will always be open for his return." Robbins' message also indicates he hopes to continue working on the release engineering aspect of Gentoo.

    "Why?"
I ask this in all seriousness. It seems to me, an admitted outsider with little Linux exp., that the more I hear the more fragmented it seems. What with this distro and that distro, KDE vs Gnome vs. X11 w/ IceWM or whatever, apt-get vs. portage (I think...) vs. compile-from-source, apparent binary incompatabilities, etc. etc. etc.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for F/OSS in principle. I first tested the Linux waters in '99 with SuSE 6.x; tried installing it on a Compaq 486 box. Never got it to go, but was later successful with a homebuilt K6-2. And it was nice! I got the xserver running, played around with different window managers, became aquinted with the CLI. And it worked better on my sketchy hardware than Win98SE (which had the typical problems) and Mandrake 7.x (which would hang during install while trying to query the PCI bus).
However, even now it seems like there is too much choice for the layperson. The average Joe doesn't want to have to mess around with .config files, they want to click 'Yes' or 'No'. I personally don't mind, but I have a geek-ish bent that goes back to high school; ran my own BBS on software that I mostly wrote myself.
Until the Linux community comes together and agrees upon a standard interface, be it Gnome, KDE, or whatever for desktop distros, then it isn't going to make it mainstream.

    Let the flaming commence.

    Figures.

No hetero male would that concerned with gay men.

Actually PeaceFinder and myself had a very lively debate on that topic just recently. Take typical and contradicing GALC rallying cry, "I'd choose this lifestyle all over again but I didn't chose it in the firstplace". Or the ephithet, "Homophobe!" supposedly meaning that one would be homosexual but they are just afraid to do it. What a boorish "know it all" attitude.

I don't care what homosexuals do in their bedroom, but they sure publically portray a sense of entitlement and arrogance that puts the 15th century crusaders to shame. Just look at the "they have it so we should too" rallying cry. Shear unadulterated and spoiled selfishness.

And some of their most vocal advocates punctuate their arrogance with such kindergarten behaviour as to make one wonder just how "gay" and "rainbow" changed meanings at all.

But I figure the same rule applies to homosexuals that Jeff Foxworthy applies to rednecks, "[they] aren't all that dumb we just can't keep the stupidest of us from being on telivision all the time." Nor can they keep the stupidest of them from making terrible political blunders (re: Mayor Newsome) or posting jokes of the stupidest kind on Slashdot.

I did. But I felt so empty and drained afterwards, I re-installed Windows, and proceeded to bang "her" like a bunny rabbit. I whipped out a cig, eased back in my chair, rested my hands aback my head, and reminisced fondly of the bad "lays" from my innocence.

Ah! Gentoo, Debian, and RedHat...I'll never forget you. Yes, each of you blew my mind with your intelligence. I ever so enjoyed "wiggling" my mouse over your slick GUI's, pressing my buttons tightly against your windows ever so delicately, and having my way with you in your juicy "/proc" interface. All in anticipation for the next kernel release, so I could finally slam my floppy into your drive and mount you like you know you wanted it.

As I stare off into the distance, just past the borders surrounding my monitor, a blurry image of "clippy" morphs into my peaceful glaze, and I can't help but think I still have some oats to sow. I'm not quite ready to settle down and marry the 'ole M$ just yet.

I fire up 'ole IE, and do some searching for the latest linux "ho". Hmm...what do we have here? Hello, sugar! What do we have here? Where have you been all my life? So, your name is "Linux From Scratch"? Wanna fuck?

People like you "On Lawn" merely immitate educated people. Unfortunately your ignorant views give you away rather easily. It doesn't even matter if you post annoymously it's plain who you are.

Discrimination against people because of their race, creed, religion or sexual preference is just plain passe nowadays. People much greater than a cliched worm like you were and are gay. Alan Turing for instance, the founder of modern computing, Artificial Intelligence and cryptography- A man that pioneered the field. Or perhaps Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest and most admired Presidents who held the Union together and abolished slavery (to verify this, read his diaries and letters). Also Leonardo DaVinci, the artist and inventor who invented things that you yourself enjoy every single day.

Bigots like your good self oppose homosexuals for one of two reasons:
1 - you are one youself but fear your urges. There's been a great deal of sociological writing on this issue.
    Or
2- You belong to a group that benefits from the persecution of minorities. fundmaentalist Christians, Neo-Nazis, KKK members etc. They all have this in common, in that they define themselves by who they persecute. Of course, a great deal of these types also fall into the first category. Of course they conviniently forget that Jesus was a Jew, and that Paul the Apostle was gay.

You do indeed care what homosexuals do in their bedroom, as you're intent on slandering them. Homosexuals are entitled to the same privelleges and rights as anyone else is. whether you like it or not, your antequated bigotry really doesn't belong on an intellectual newsgroup for Nerds. Something you obviously pathetically aspire to.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." - Ring any bells? No, I thought not.

So next time you're using your computer that a GAY pioneered, or driving a car that yet another GAY invented, or living in the UNITED states of America, don't forget to thank the Gay men that made it all possible for you.
