Microsoft Security Updates for Pirated Windows?

zachlipton writes "DSL Reports has an interesting question posted: should users with pirated copies of Windows be allowed to download security updates, such as for Sasser? Apparently, without a valid CD key, users cannot download these updates. Do they get what they deserve, or should they be allowed these updates through Windows Update in order to reduce the impact of these worms on the rest of the net? Should security updates only for worms be made available to pirated users, or also updates for issues that while not posing a risk to other internet users, would open the pirate up to a security hole?"

On a serious note why doesn't free software start advertising on warez sites. Or better yet, someone should replace the Window startup screen with free software advertisements and then distribute the modified versions on Kazaa.

So do we let IV drug users turn in there IV's for new ones at the hospital or at a "drop spot" to reduce the risk of contracting AIDS even tho we all know they should just stop doing the drug, ? Do we pass out condoms in schools and churchgroups to reduce the risk of becoming teen parents, even tho the best solution is to just wait untill you old enough to have sex? Do we allow people access to updates for Software that we all know is stolen, just so we can reduce the threat created by computer viruses? Or do We Just chalk it up to Natural selection and let Darwin sort it out?
