Perens Talks About Open Source Risk Management
Big Sav writes "Here is a quick but good interview with Bruce Perens. It also raises the topic of indemnification vis a vis the SCO court case
" Interesting interview - talks about Peren's new Open Source Risk Management company.
FP????
STFU, Perens !!!
penis! rofl lmao
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Windows apologists? I've
been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Dell Inspiron 1100 with Windows XP
Professional (a 2ghz Pentium 4 with 256MB ram) for about a minute and a half while it attempts
to bring up the "All Programs" section of the WinXP start menu. Nearly 2 whole minutes. At
home, on my K6-300 running Knoppix off a CD-ROM, which by all standards should be a lot slower
than this Wintel box, the same operation would take about 5 seconds. If that.
In addition, Windows Explorer will not work. When I click on View | Explorer bar, everything
else grinds to a halt for about 10-20 seconds before the list with "Folders" on it shows up.
Even notebook.exe is straining to key up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working
with various Windows operating systems, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the
least of which is I've never seen a Wintel machine that has run faster than its Linux/AMD
counterpart, despite the premium you are required to pay for the priveledge of running
Windows. My P2/233 notebook with 32 megs of ram and Gentoo ran faster than this 2Ghz machine
at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that Windows is
superior to other operating systems.
MCSE's, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would
choose to use a Wintel setup over other faster, cheaper, and more stable systems.
Reading about his "company" struck me as being extortionist. To me (a business owner), it sounds like "There are many problems with Open Source Software. Pay us, and we'll protect you from all of them. If you don't, well, you're fucked."
Gee, whiz. I want nothing more than to start using wonderful OSS, now!!
Either I need indemnification, or I don't. Which is it? If there's any question whatsoever, I'm gonna err on the side of caution and stick with proprietary code.
For a blow-hard, do-nothing media whore, Perens sure can fuck things up.
How did you like it when I gave you the bone hard and fast last night? I was the one in the sombrero...
