Ask About Running Windows Software in Linux

There have been recent reports about programs from Israel, Canada, and The Philippines that let you run Windows software in Linux. Are they really new? Can they succeed? Is this whole effort worth the time and trouble going into it? CodeWeavers CEO and Wine maven Jeremy White ought to know, since he's been working to bring Windows software to Linux users for many years -- with quite a bit of success. We'll forward 10 - 12 of the highest moderated questions posted here to Jeremy, and run his answers as soon as we get them back.

    I suspect it will, but the real question is...why would you want to run anything Windoze under such a fine OS as Ninnle Linux. Ninnle already does everything Windoze does, and so much more!

    If you want to run a bunch of junky closed source sofware that you can't pay some poor college student or russian to patch for you when it breaks then you might as well buy windows.(I suppose you could patch it yourself, but hardly anyone does that, they just whine about the bugs to everyone they meet). If you buy a normal computer from a normal store they give you a free copy of windows with it already installed. If you want games that are only available on windows, then pony up and run windows. If you're satisified (like me) with running games on PS2 and XBox then you can save yourself a lot of grief.

    Wine is just a way to port the grief you get from Windows and Windows applications to a Linux environment. Once wine starts working flawlessly I'm sure MS will redo everything to try and break it or at least keep Wine 3 steps behind them. It doesn't sound like a race we can win.

    Just a retard would like to apply that silly ms security patches while running linux, lol. So fuck everything trying to mix win & lin or lin & win.
