Rand Report Says Geospatial Data Not Big Threat

scupper writes "An article in Federal Computer Week came out Monday that announced The Rand Corporation has published a report (sponsored by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) concerning the threat that publicly available geospatial data on US Government web sites might pose in the hands of terrorists that 'found that less than one percent of the 629 federal data sets they studied appeared to have notable value to would-be attackers', according to the report titled: Mapping the Risks:Assessing the Homeland Security Implications of Publicly Available Geospatial Information. A curious 'finding' from page xxv of the summary not mentioned in the article states: 'However, we cannot conclude that publicly accessible federal geospatial information provides no special benefit to the attacker. Neither can we conclude that it would benefit the attacker.' The release of this report reminded me strangly of the Washington Post news story about a George Mason University graduate student, whose dissertation mapped critical fiber optic network infrastructure."

      Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda stepped off the bus and was led into the yard of the Main
      State Correctional Institute. He had been given ten years for participating in
      a stock fraud. Five with good behavior. Years spent basking in the glow of a
      CRT had been hard on him. His body was frail, his skin pallid. He knew he could
      never make it through ten years in the general population with his virginity
      intact. He had to get into solitary.

      As soon as the burly guard unshackled him he made his move. Exhaling a feminine
      "hmmph" he weakly slapped the guard. He was quickly taken to the ground,
      receiving a swift kick to the ribs before being restrained. As he was dragged
      to the solitary confinement cell he felt nothing but relief. "At least in

      The next few days were uneventful. The time in his cell he spent evenly between
      sleeping, reading a "Perl for Dummies" book he had gotten from the book cart,

      The guard left the shower stall, only to return minutes later. He opened the

      With that the guard slammed the shower door closed and walked away laughing.

      The men approached Rob, backing him into a corner. The apparent leader stepped
      forward. "No matter what I'm gonna fuck that purdy lil' ass of yours. Now I can
      fuck it dry or you can lube it up for me." Rob knew he had no choice. He
      kneeled in front of the leader, who began to slap his face with his 10 black

    Let me guess -- you're suggesting that I created the account just so I could get listed on some slashdot hate site? I don't control what some anonymous person puts up there. Why don't you start speaking your own convictions instead of beating around the bush already?

    If you think that speech which is distasteful to you and offends your sensitivities should be censored, then say so. State publicly that your sensitivities are more important than the freedoms we enjoy in our society.

    good luck with your experiment of posting valid content under an offensive id. as you can see, it's not being modded down anyway, so it's working so far. well done. what exactly that has proved/achieved is another matter, but who really cares anyway.
