Is Linux Improving Life Of Poor In India?

mood6 writes "Linux Journal has a nice article on Automating Government with e-Governance. It discusses Linux usage by the Indian government to improve the lives of the rural poor (interesting look at how the IT boom in India is benefiting the poor). The article covers some of the difficulties in deploying Linux in non-English languages for government usage. Good read for those looking at Linux in e-Governance projects and a good follow up to a previous article by Tom Adelstein. In support of full disclosure: I wrote the article and the platform was developed by Delixus, my current company."

The application of Linux in India lowers cost of setting up a new software sweat shop. It also allows more people to be schooled in software development, that previously could not afford education. Implication => More US jobs can be outsourced, cheaper.

I am not sure any American software developer would like to do anything to help getting more IT jobs outsourced.

It's almost akin to "U.S.-style-f**ked-up-democracy (or duo-cracy) is the prescription for Iraq" kind of mono-mania that seems to plague the U.S. "farc-o-cracy" - or perhaps "demo-crazy" (with a Z not a C).

These middle and high class dudes that claim that we know nothing of India and that their poor do not need water and food and decent living quarters make me laugh.

They feel offended if we state India it's a 3rd World Country that needs a huge reform... they feel offended if we point to the dismal conditions that a great part of their population must suffer...

It must be that they belong to that tiny percentage that sits nicely on top, beneffiting from the current status quo...

Come on guys, we are talking about people who have never seen a computer!! So linux can't but only windows can. Here's how: If more and more "rich" people start buying Windows and its accessories then M$ India Inc will have more and more money. Then Billy Boy will be forced to found a trust in India exclusively for Indians that are poor.

There is no point in having 1000 people with $ 50 million each in an economy. We need 1 person with $ 50,000 million. Then he/she will be indifferent to money and will be spending it in lot of "good" things. So it's imperative that we make one person supra rich. Otherwise it won't work, for all the obvious reasons.
