Game Sites Finish Up Post-E3 Awards

An anonymous reader writes "Most of the major game sites have put up 'Best of E3' sections, including those from Gamespot, from IGN, from GameSpy, and from 1UP . Everyone gave a different Best of Show this year, and agreed that the competition was fierce. I was happy to see mention of Yoot Saito's Odama and Namco's Katamari Damashii. Notable absences, in my opinion, included Tim Schafer's chronically late Psychonauts for Xbox. What games caught your eye? Who was the big winner this year?" T adds: Danno writes "The gang over here at GameGal.com have just put up our 2004 edition of the E3 Hall of Shame. Each year we chronicle the best of the worst in booth babes and half-naked female video game characters. We're not really offended by most of this, but it is amusing to see the lengths companies will go to catch the attention of jaded E3 attendees."

International House of Mojo reports that without a publisher, Psychonauts creator Tim Schaffer had to show the game out of his hotel room. Although that sounds weird, my bet is that it was a very funny hotel room, maybe as funny as some of those Korean booths at E3 in the warehouse near the restrooms.

    From the Mojo:

Wonder why there is no Psychonauts news from any other media sites? Our own Doug Tabacco on the show floor explains:

That's because Psychonauts isn't being shown on the floor. With no publisher to host them and no time or space left to secure a booth of their own, Tim is reduced to showing it out of a hotel suite. We called him and tried to set up a meeting, but he said he's totally booked up. We take that to be a good thing, since it means lots of people (hopefully some of them publishers) are seeing the game.

Thre you have it folks... You heard it here first! Exclusive E3 News coverage. Come on you know Mojo still loves you. It does.

As I said, I've already been in trouble for it - back in college, there was a ops guy who lamented about his 80 hour+ weeks, yet he never got anything done, so I made a web page about what he REALLY was doing using a number of cartoons (none of them lewd, but lots of implication - most people who knew him couldn't stop laughing). The page was unlinked, and had a disclaimer that it was entirely in jest, but word got around and eventually he saw it. Needless to say, he didn't find it very funny. Eventually, our boss got involved, and I was told it was unacceptable conduct by a teaching assistant and given the (blackmail) choice of destroying the page and resigning or being fired, expelled and sued for both slander and defamation (yeah, most of it probably wasn't winnable in court, but they were using scare tactics and I definitely didn't have any leverage beyond begging at that point). I eventually talked my way out of having to resign by defending my reasoning for making the joke in the first place, specifying that I never linked the page and it wasn't meant to be seen by anyone but me, and by writing a letter of apology to him, the school, and posting the apology on the former site. Apparently he must have still taken the court case through early proceedings, because my court appointed lawyer called a couple of times after that asking questions, though I never had to appear in court (I suspect it was dropped... wish they woulda told me).

That was probably the most scary interview/interrogation since I was busted for giving a page of bomb plans from the BBS version of the Anarchist Cookbook to a kid in Jr High who ended up photocopying and selling it for 25 cents a copy in the library. I had no idea it was LEGAL to possess the cookbook until the cop interrogating me told me so and said he couldn't do anything. School policy didn't have anything specifically addressing such things either (it wasn't a weapon), but an appendum was added to the school rules recommending suspension and possible expulsion for "weapons literature" (this was years before Columbine). The last stint of good PC CRPG were the Bioware/BlackIsle style point-and-clicks that you'll still see from Bioware, Obsidian, and whatever no-namer Atari contracts.

As for Japanese-style RPGs... Lets see... Final Fantasy XII, Tales of Symphonia, Baiten Kaitos, Xenosaga II. A decent showing. Not "teh best evar" but I've seen worse. Also on the horizon includes the big daddy, Dragon Quest 8.

Not to mention there are several games with strong story elements such as the sequel to The Longest Journey that promise to be appealing. We're also going to see a lot of tactical "RPG" games like Front Mission 4, Fire Emblem (Cube), and Phantom Brave. Not to mention other fringe titles like NEC's Matrix 00 for PS that's selling through the roof in Japan and (maybe?) will sell stateside. This should be a bumper crop for a typically underpopulated genre.

No PC developer does it. Those who do something akin to Diablo call an Action/RPG title exactly that - Witcher, Bard's Tale and Jade Empire ere not being held out as CRPGs. Sacred is marketed as an Action/RPG as well.

The RPG market did not die in 1995 - it went to sleep. Baldur's Gate and Falpout revived it.

And a bunch of quality developers (and publishers)will have to lose their shirts on the MMORPG glut before it returns to the PC side.

Perhaps, as AltaMannen pointed out, it's part of the Midway curse- until this year, I would agree that besides MK:DA (which I loved) Midway has not put out a good game in years. But, if you bother to look at anything at all recent, you'd see we are on track to turn that completely around. We've released 2 games this year, and both (IMHO) are fantastic. I'm not personally a huge fan of The Suffering, just not my genre... but neither is basketball, however Ballers has become one of favorite games- particularly in a party-type situation. Both games are very different from anything Midway's put out recently... and, I daresay, anything anybody's put out, for that matter.

Psi-Ops is going to be hugely different- it provides a style of gameplay that is completely new. Telekenisis as a weapon has not been done like this before- I don't care if you played Legacy of Kain or Gallerians or whatever else you think has "done it before", you haven't experienced a play mechanic like this, period. That should at least count for something- either way, it's totally ignorant to discount a game and/or an entire company forever because they had a down period, no matter how long.
