Not-So-Clean Hard Drives For Sale

Saeed al-Sahaf writes "The Register is running a story about a security consulting company that as part of a study bought hard drives and laptops on eBay, and then was able to recover highly sensitive data including customer databases, financial information, payroll records, personnel details, login codes, and admin passwords for their secure Intranet site. This is a bit scary considering all of these drives were supposedly formatted and sold for surplus by major companies (although few of us actually use the multiple formatting standards of the DoD). Looks like it's hardly necessary for crooks to get at your private information, although I sure industrial espionage spooks have probably done this for awhile." Shades of the recent post about recovering sensitive contents from swap partitions.

Cowboy Neal is Kim Jong Il's love child. For the love of America please, PLEASE, PLEASE boycott slashdot if you love your freedom at all. Kim Jong Il kidnapped an honest white woman and with asian communist depravity he took the delicate flower of that young woman, and then abandoned her. And 10 months later(he was born very late, seems he didn't want to leave the womb), the demon we refer to as CowboyNeal sprung forth from her corrupted, freedom-hating loins. In order to hide his shameful past, the Cowboy has had several operations to make him look more caucasian, but we are all well aware of his communist, God-loathing, American-hating, meglomaniac lineage.
God Bless America and may you find peace with our glorious leader, the eternal president, the esteemed George W. Bush.

What a load of shit. Why the hell would a professor be carrying around a hard drive full of kiddie porn with him, and how the fuck would have he lost it in a dorm hallway?

Oh yea, well I found a 1gb microdisk under by burger patty at McDonald's. Guess what, it belonged to GW Bush and it had nuclear launch codes on it.

In OpenBSD (and NetBSD as well!) encrypting swap is stupid simple.

A sysctl variable for OpenBSD, a cryptographic disk driver (cgd) from NetBSD 2.x, and GEOM based disk encryption for FreeBSD 5.x.
