Telus Puts A Stop To 'Modem Hijacking'

TheIonix writes "Telus, a major telco in Canada, decided to block long distance direct-dialed calls to four countries to help reduce dial-up 'modem hijacking'. The article explains: 'When the [dial-up] user downloads [certain malware programs], the downloaded file accesses software on their computer and causes the modem to dial phone numbers in foreign countries, resulting in long distance charges.' 4 countries were targeted: Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Nauru and Sao Tome. It is still possible to call to those countries with the operator assistance and the fees are waived. Now let's see if this nice idea will be followed by others."

I'm still not taking that sleazebag ISP out of my RBL. I'm sick and tired of these ISPs not controlling the traffic from their customers, especially in cases where this stuff is so easily managed.

Nice idea? How about you also mention how Telus decided to block all incoming traffic on ports 80 and 21. I was running a webserver for my personal site, as well as an FTP server with Telus. A couple weeks ago they decided that they were getting "too much spam" on port 80, and that some people might trade "illegal files" on FTPs, so they blocked incoming traffic on those ports for all residential members. Talk about the stupidest idea ever. It forced me to switch ISPs and I would be surprised if they don't lose more customers because of stupid restrictions and "ideas" like these.

Funny, I seem to still be able to access port 80 and 21 on my home computer that is connected through telus.

That's very stupid. They should go after your friend and people who make money from others.

And where do you get your money from, praytell? Obviously, others pay you. Either that, or you print your own money. Or perhaps you are among the teaming, whining, ceaselessly-unemployed that, like vulchers after roadkill, gather here on Slashdot?

Maybe you're one of the neo-luddite crowd, using a computer made from transistors you grew yourself and capacitors consisting mostly of potatos. Do you generate your own electricity with a handcrank and a bar of homemade soap, too?

Or have you just stopped sucking on your mom's tit recently enough that she still permits you to live in the basement, while numbly paying the DSL bill every month?

Or maybe it's just a typo. But it's a fucking ugly typo. If it were to appear further down instead of garishly in the first paragraph, I'd probably not have written this.

But it was, and so I have.

Next time, proof your work first. Then post.
