Gates: Open Source Kills Jobs
theodp writes "On the Malaysian leg of a whirlwind Asian tour, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates voiced his concerns over the growing goodwill towards open source, especially in Asia, emphasizing how damaging open source software can be. 'If you don't want to create jobs or intellectual property, then there is a tendency to develop open source. It is not something you do as a day job. If you want to give it away, you work on it at night,' he said. Gates, who apparently has never contended with the horrors of a VB upgrade, when on to say that '[Open source] doesn't guarantee upward compatibility.'"
I've developed this weird little hobby. I like to track all the subway cars that go through the stations here in Boston. I guess it's kind of like trainspotting. Is anyone else out there doing this also? I tried googling for other people who share this interest but I didn't come up with anything. Hope to hear from you.
I spent over a week trying to compile a GIS program for Linux .. PostGIS with the GEOS module needed to get full spatial functionality in PostGIS database.
.. they can code, but can't put a simple not on their website except for the note to 'Update Often!' which would screw anyone who actually did.
.. NOT so that it would work with that script or a newer version.
They didn't tell anyone that their CVS source was broken
The last stable version was programmed to require only a specific compiler script to work
I finally figured out how to edit the script and trick it into thinking i was using the older version. This worked, proving the newer script was compatible.
There were plenty of other problems getting the software to run during that time. Mostly due to extremely poor instructions that left out CRITICAL steps needed to make things run.
Will the person who thinks linux is free please re-imburse my company for the 2 weeks labour lost simply to install one damn software package.
That was 2 weeks where I wasn't producing profitable work for the company, where I was a liability.
I can easily see open source killing jobs.
All the programming jobs go to India anyway, so who in North America cares?
Most of the people who work on major open source programs are paid. Is that not considered a job to Microsoft?

You're missing the point of the 1st, I think. It doesn't say that I have to listen to anything you say, only that you have a right to say it. There is a huge difference.

...that al Qaeda DOES have proven ties to Iraq. The issue is whether or not Iraq had direct, collaborative involvement in 9/11, which they didn't, and which neither Cheney nor anyone in the Bush administration ever said. (Also, there is anything but "massive" evidence regarding ANYTHING having to do with al Qaeda's Iraq ties. The ties existed, period. The fact they did is actually inconsequential, since the US's Iraq policy has ZERO to do with al Qaeda, and everything to do with instituting a moderate, quasi-free, Western-friendly government in Iraq that will extend our influence and, over time, kill off Panislamic radicalism once and for all - as opposed to Europe's apparent strategy of alternatively either doing nothing, or chaging over 35% of the populace's vote (cf. Spain) in an effort to placate terrorists (Hint: that's the stupidest idea ever), content instead to ride the wave of the literally tens of BILLIONS of dollars rolling in from UN Oil For Food Programme contracts administration (Hello, France, Russia, and Germany); the neverending spigot that stopped the second someone actually had the balls to take care of Iraq. (And guess what, asshole? Even though the US at one time supported Saddam, that's the nature of the complex world policy scene: sometimes perceived lesser evils are supported against greater ones: Saddam against Iran, Taliban (wildly successfully) against the former USSR.) And in the ultimate slap in the face to the antiwar whiners, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch estimate an average of 50000 Iraqis per year unnecessarily died EACH YEAR under sanctions - the sanctions that allowed -- surprise, surprise -- France, Russia, and Germany, in that order, to get rich. Since March 2003, INCLUDING the Iraqis who were killed by coalition forces during the invasion and since, there has actually been a NET PRESERVATION of Iraqi lives, on the order of the thousands. A statistically significant PRESERVATION of Iraqi lives, all from the relatively minimal infrastructure and services improvements made by coalition forces since March 2003. Also, maybe you should wake the fuck up and realize that regardless of all this, the US economy - and by extension, the global economy - is neck neep in the middle east, and that's not going to change. So instead of spouting off a bunch of complete tripe horseshit like "Maybe people should stop driving Hummers and we should get the fuck out of Saudi Arabia", you could wake up and smell the fucking coffee of the reality that every single thing Western industrialized society does, from water purification to food processing, from fertilizers to construction, from medicine to everything else, depends upon cheap energy - and that depends upon our interaction with the mideast. So fuck off. Your bringing Cheney into this is juvenile, and only shows your complete and utter lack of intelligence, and somehow seeing political overtones (that don't exist) in everything.
Eighteen years ago I saw this U.F.O
And saddled up my tractor for a cosmic caravan
I followed it through space and found this distant place
Where everything is perfect for alien and a man
We're carefree and easy and light years from home
Why don't you lose that frown and let your hair down
Come on let's link together in zero gravity
I was born in Moscow baby You could maybe be my girl
Ride my tractor all night long And everyone will sing our song
We put on a great show a tractor rodeo
Everyone's invited everyone should come
Ten tractors in the night Ride shotgun if you like
We're modern day space cowboys always on the run
We're carefree and easy and light years from home
Why don't you lose that frown and let your hair down
Come on let's link together in zero gravity
I was born in Moscow baby You could maybe be my girl
Ride my tractor all night long And everyone will sing our song

Here's a teaser, but when you get to the bit near the end with Thandi Palane and Victor Cachat (as observed by Princess Ruth Winton), you'll turn into a regular fire suppressant station.
Got time? Spend some of it coding or testing
