Sony's $700 Linux-based Remote Control

SlashdotMeNow points out a remote control to consider if money is no object: "The NAVITUS from Sony has a 64k colour touch-screen with tactile response, 32MB of RAM and a 200MHz processor. Looking at the photos it looks like a sexy little beast! It uses Linux as an OS and you can customise just about everything about it by linking it up to your PC. Hell, this thing is more powerful than my iPAQ. Useful for replacing your TV, DVD, sound system and other home entertainment system remotes, it can also control your lights and air conditioner. ... Just be careful using the Memory Stick slot - you don't want to get a virus on a device that controls your whole house!" Of course, that would have to be a Linux virus ...

    It is important what is inside. In the last months I had a very bad expirience with devices with the closed source OS (network routers in my case). Without access to the OS of the device you are "delivered" to the company, and have to wait for all (also trivial) fixes and features. In the case of the open OS you could do it yourself (at least in the theory). Somehow, I hate to be helpless and delivered.

    There's tons of information out there re: Linux/x86 virus writing and infecting ELF binaries.

    Being smug about the fact that nobody's succesfully spread a Linux virus yet seems stupid to me.

    If the shit hits the fan, what are you going to do? How many of you have anti-virus software installed on your Linux systems? How well can that software work when there aren't any Linux viruses in the wild for the author(s) to provide protection against?

    Now that sounds like a great idea. You could have buttons on your handset for "seat fully closed" {for cutting toenails}, "lid up / ring seat deployed" {for shitting, and for women pissing} and "fully open" {for puking, and for men pissing}, as well as for activating partial and full flush. It has the potential to solve all sorts of marital arguments .....
