Hiptop/Sidekick Sequel Unleashed

powerline22 writes "After years of waiting, the second Hiptop (or Sidekick, depending on the carrier) has been unveiled to the public. After the terrible hardware reliability of the first version, the second one, manufactured by Sharp, looks a lot better, with longer battery life, built-in camera, more buttons, better radio, new software features and more. Also, according to T-Mobile, sync is going to finally be here real soon now. There are reviews at CNet, over at PCMag, and at MSNBC." We recently covered leaked Hiptop II photos.

The problem with T-Mobile is still that they have absolutely HORRIBLE coverage. Look at their map. If it's not colord a shade of red, it's not covered - so about 98% of the country isn't covered.

I didn't start using a cell phone so that I'd be able to call someone for help if my car breaks down IN A MAJOR CITY - I want the cell phone when I'm *not* surrounded by phones.

By contrast, any dual-mode phone used by sprint, verizon, or cingular has a coverage area that includes closer to 80% of the continental US. I can go hundreds of miles from the nearest major city and still have excellent coverage.

Until T-mobile has more competitive coverage, even if it's only via roaming agreements, as far as I'm concerned they're not an option.

I have exactly the same problem with Nextel - their walkie-talkie feature is awesome - but I absolutely cannot rely on their service because they have zero roaming agreements (probably because no one else is offering service from cb towers like they do).
