According to the latest estimates here at Trolling Headquarters, Slashdot's 10,000,000th post will be posted on August 18, @08:30AM Eastern time, which is an update to our previous estimate.
Some history
Back in the old days, post numbers were shorter because they were the post number for the current story (#1, #2, #3...). Thinking that this was fueling the rash of "first posts", CmdrTaco replaced it with a boringly large "comment id" representing the post number for the whole of Slashdot. There were a few fuck-ups during the conversion process: posts in this 2001 story have smaller numbers than posts in this 1999 story.
The new system is unexpectly backfiring: trolls still try to get "first posts", geeks find that the urls are bloated from an information theoretic perspective, and... there is now a new category of junk post to aim for: cute comment id numbers!

Then an access point as 'news'
Now an announcement about some DVD's that we already knew were coming out... as 'news'
I predict the next 'news' item will report the Earth successfully completing yet another rotation... What a slow news day..

site seems to work fine for me.. my server survived the/. effect before (i.e. being on the main page).. the links in the comments dont get much traffic.. maybe its your ISP
anyway wow archive.org already archived those? i just uploaded them like 3 hours ago.
