PowerBook G4 Battery Recall

Beelsebob writes "Apple have put out a recall on a certain group of PowerBook G4 batteries. If you have a PowerBook G4 (Aluminum) 15" and your battery's model number is A1045, and its serial number starts HQ404, HQ405, HQ406, HQ407, or HQ408, then you could be at risk of it overheating."

It's not that hard to do. For the premium you pay for an Apple laptop, they shove in the cheapest korean-made battery on the market.

Just like the el cheap-o eMachines-calibur power supplies they use, even in the "top dollar" G5 machines.

Batteries/PSU and cabling are where costs are cut. They aren't sexy specs to list in the marketting material, and you cant see them from the outside, so it's irrelevant if they're pretty or not.

They're thinking about how to spin Apple's obvious lack of QA as a "great innovation in computer science". They'll be here. They'll respond to this Apple-critical post in droves, just watch!

You think for as much as one of those things cost, relative to a PC laptop, they'd have tested them to make sure they dont overheat.

It's like the iPod battery problem. For 400 bucks they couldn't make sure they put a good battery in there?

What exactly are you paying the extra cash for, if not a higher quality? This isn't the first line of overheating Mac-tops, the last ones actually caught fire, IIRC.

if a PC maker makes something that doesn't work quite right or had to be recalled it's because windows is the devil. if apple does some that needs to be recalled, it's because they're too innovative and trying to push what's light and portable. Yay flamebait.

I had always planned on getting one for work once I graduated with my English degree and begin interning at a publishing house. But a few things have turned me off against it.

    1) Extremely annoying Mac zealots chanting "It has teh UNIX!" when they have no clue what that means.
    2) "Total Cost of 0wnership" study showing how laughably weak MacOS is, even though "it has teh UNIX!"
    3) The OS is proprietary, as is the hardware. Expensive and hard to come by.
    4) The elitist stigma that would come with owning one. (I don't think they'll sell you one unless you have an aloof attitude, a goatee and a pair of those fashionably thick-framed rectangular eyeglasses.)
    5) This bit of news.

Apple is just as susceptible to flaws like this as anyone else. I prefer the more ubiquitous and affordable hardware.

I've decided instead that when the time comes I should get an IBM Thinkpad and put RHEL on it.
