If you thought we read by recognizing word shapes, think again! With the assistance of fancy eye-tracking cameras researchers have been able to devise several clever experiments to give us new insight into how reading works."     They seem to have forgotten that you can recognise a lot of words wtih the letters out of order as long as the first and last letters are in the right spot. in fact there was a slashdot article on it a while ago.
