Mandrake 10.1 RC1 Available
Freshly Exhumed writes "Warly has announced the availability of Mandrake Linux 10.1 RC1 via torrent or FTP for those who enjoy bug reporting. Key ingredients: kernel 2.6.8 with parts of 2.6.9, xorg 6.7.0, KDE 3.2.3, Gnome 2.6, Mozilla 1.7.2, glibc 2.3.3, and gcc 3.4.1, among other goodies found in over 1,800 packages. This announcement follows on the heels of the Mandrake & LaCie project known as GlobeTrotter, a USB hard drive-based Mandrake distribution portable to most of today's PCs."

supermount isn't used anymore to mount removable devices, they won't automatically appear on KDE desktop. To have removable device icons back on your desktop, go in the KDE Control Center/LookNFeel/Behavior/Devices icons, and make sure that the "Unmounted Hard Disc Partition" option is checked. Menus The simplified menu system has been enhanced to avoid the "All Applications" entry. Networking hostname changes and X sessions hostname changes triggered by network scripts will no longer break X sessions. This is implemented in the s2u package. default route Default routes are handled by device now to allow easy plugging/unplugging of network cards. To have priority between your devices, use the METRIC variable in your ifcfg-* files. While this is 10.1 up from 10, it might seem like a small step. However, most of the updates are in the packages and not nessesarily in mandrake specific stuff. People are probably going to upgrade because it's easier than loading on all new packages. Plus, it looks like they've got some nicer automatic hardware support. I'll give mandrake that, their hardware support is pretty good.
