Challenging Web Services Buying Decisions

Michael S. Mimoso writes "A Forrester Research report points out that major vendors are encroaching on the Web services market currently dominated by smaller specialty vendors. That could make for some trying times in the near future for enterprises exploring Web services and SOA."

    There will always be a place for small custom solutions, because it is impossible to make a one size fits all application. I think this is particularly true in the Web Services arena.

    There's also apparently a large amound of programmers with nothing better to do with their time than publish some open source apps, which take much more out of small shops. Big shops like IBM capitalize on free labor, small shops are out of business.

      Then what do you say about the small open source shops? By your logic, they should annihilate themselves.

    Small vendors beware, you may be relegated to the scrap heap when big business integrates your idea for free. In other words, patent your shit, wait for them to integrate, then sue.

    My company is a niche market software provider. Hopefully MS won't come into my area (doubtful).

    That is not going to happen because too many of the people running these small businesses have personal relationships with their customers.
    .. and their customers happen to be small businesses themselves.
