For Mac development, the free XCode tools are good, however I would look into CodeWarrior because ObjectiveC, in my opinion, is an antiquated and bastardized attempt at object orientated programming, CodeWarrior offers C++ access to OSX programming API's.

As nice as it is, you might want to avoid CodeWarrior on Mac - arent they killing this product with the move to Intel?

XCode would be the way to go on a Mac - it handles different languages.

  7. reaching for the sky... on A Game Developer's Bill of Rights · · Score: 2, Insightful
I predict game developers wont get very far with getting those rights. You work in the machine, you play by the machine's rules. You don't like the rules, you get out of the machine.

Their first thing about ownership of what they create - no suit will get past that one! Their lawyers would have nightmares about sorting out who owns what on the screen at any given time - and how much profit each one is making. (Think "I created the gun Bob uses in that scene!".)

They say it's based on the bill of rights for comic creators - how much have Marvel and DC bend for that? What did Todd, Keith and the the rest of them at Marvel do? They left. They formed Image.
That's the only way the game developers are going to get what is in that bill of rights.

I thought they wanted sane hours and pay for the hours worked? Why not make a bill of rights a little more basic?

get over it - windows is a buggy, crappy, badly implemented hack. it's version one, beta. it may work now, but it's behind the curve and falling fast. the next 'big' feature they need to add to that poor code base should be a real nightmare...

sure macs can cost more - but why do so many people drive hondas?! could it be that people just want stuff to work?! if you want to get a bunch of stuff done with your computer - buy a mac. if you dont mind dinking around with your computer and you actually like a command line - get any old machine and put linux on it.

Also, what if the server owners charged by the minute/hour/whatever [online time] rather than by the month? That could be put everyone on a more level field - it might not be as attractive to those with crazy amounts of freetime, but for the rest of us it could work out better.

Today, many people want to see Tom Cruise, and are willing to pay for it. A studio is thus justified in paying him US$20M to act in their movie. This is an investment they make -- they hope his name will attract move people to see the movie, thus increasing their profits.

I can't wait till some actor in Hollywood lets a studio lease their likeness and put a CGI version in a live action movie or three. Some of the CGI characters are getting better and better (think Spiderman, LOTR, etc.).

Get famous, lease your likeness, retire & profit...
