Deaf Children Invent Language

gmuslera writes "According to this story, Nicaraguan deaf kids, without knowing any existing sign language, invented their own language on their own, and it keeps evolving. Is this going in the same way as Varley's The Persistence of Vision?"

    ...psychologists, deaf to all critics, have invented their own language full of impenetreble jargon and words that aren't in the dictionary, like 'comorbidity.' These professionals went out of their way to take relatively straightforward concepts and render them incomprehensible. This was achieved through a strange compulsion to use obfuscatory language and the re-deployment of everyday words in anything but their everyday meanings.

    Given that such studies are the modus operandi of the psychological professions, we needn't worry that the field seems to have made so little progress in the century or so of its existence: indeed, we should rather consider it a miracle that it has made any progress whatsoever.
