EyeToy-Like Games For the Web

An anonymous reader wrote "The Playdo Community recently launched PlaydoCAM, a whole new technology for web games that transform your webcam into a gaming device you control by moving your body. For the widest audience possible PlaydoCAM is based on standard Flash and Shockwave technology and can be played directly in your web browser without the need of extra plug-ins or installations." Demos are available on the site, but no full fledged games yet.

    i still fail to see why this is revolutionary
    my intel PC Pro cam back in 1998 had this functionality... you could pop bubbles and play volleyball on your netcam

    It looks like an interesting concept, but not much we havent seen before. The real difficulty is in making the games playable without interferance from accidental motion screwing things up. If this were more than an interesting gimmick then imagine the frustration of getting to the end of some game and having a cat jump on your shoulder or sneezing.

      Having a cat jump on my shoulder pretty much messes any game, even nethack.

    Well maybe this time they can make a go of it.... I am not really inspired that it uses Flash/Shockwave technology. Is this just to push Flash/Shockwave? Or is it really the correct technology to make use of in this case? Or both? My experience with Flash/Shockwave on win32 and linux is that it's a resource hog. Go over to m-w.com and look at their real-time word search feature. It was hammering my cpu under windows and similarly under linux.

    Think of using it for RPGs... swinging a sword, etc while in battle. Add in multiplayer, and it really becomes something to play and interact with especially with other people.
