Once people understand the implications and the power behind the technology and they still aren't concerned that it could have profound good and bad consequences for all life here then that's proof that it needs to be controlled. But can it be controlled? I don't think so. Let the nano-wars begin!
Cool board. But does it really have jumpers? I thought jumpers were long gone. Maybe I've been out of touch with the state of the art.
BTW funny stuff about the submitters. If you're expecting stories to get any kind of verification I think you're going to be disappointed. Hell the NY Times can't even get that done. Why would you think that slashdot would be able to?
Bush finally does the right wing religious whackos a favor by taking the Hubble down. They never wanted it up there in the first place. They think "we have no business looking back into the time of creation, to look over God's shoulder while he created the world".
NASA certainly did not reach this conclusion they were forced reach it. Bush and the religious-right will gladly fund manned-space flights to Mars. What a huge waste of money. We are on Mars now and getting good data back. we certainly do not need to send manned flights there. Deep space is where it's at and where we need to be looking.
It's not just Bush. It's the whole whacky group of zealots that call themselves fundamentalist christians. Bush hasn't done that much for them but shitcanning space programs is doing those freaks a big favor. They did not want the Hubble to go up and is a fact that many people seem to have forgotten. The Hubble is not finished yet. And as for any project that goes looking for answers out in space, well those are just the ones the freaks don't like. They say things like "we have no business going out and peering back into time to witness creation" But they're okay with little episodes within our solar system. Does everyone understand now? Spread the word, this is not a joke.
They really are a sick bunch. And the shrub owes them some favors. Plus Bush probably thinks the moon visits were faked.
if you're unlucky enough to live in a place where there is a monopolistic strangelhold on bandwidth then dial up might be the way to go. (BTW what's the cheapest dial-up service these days?) You could setup a wifi bridge in your attic or on your house if you can't find a reliable signal with a wifi card. All kinds of antennas are available these days. wirelessnetworkproducts.com is at least a starting point (don't know anything about them)
Just an observation and maybe some food for thought. But he's not really causing problems. He's only pointing out that security via obscurity is not security. BTW did you know that Feynman's favorite pastime was safecracking? BTW you do realize that the study of almost anything is reverse engineering, don't you? Physics, math, whatever. So where's the problem? Why is reverse engineering of one thing considered a problem while reverse engineering of something else is not?

look at linux but have a hard time switching from solaris because once you realize the cost of, for example, RHE3 support and it's about the same and solaris is a much more mature OS. The linux kernel has some things to iron out still. Plus with solaris you have one vendor to deal with for hardware and software. There are very valid reasons why solaris is still alive.
First off, I'd say you're doing this bass-ackwards. You really should have already answered all these and many other questions before ever laying fingers to keyboard.
It depends on lots of things. Who's going to manage the self-hosted host? If they have an IT dept. maybe they can provide the hardware sizing. In any case you will first need to establish the usage patterns and then go forward from there.
This is the coolest video tech to come along in a while. I already bought stock in TI. I think these will be replacing all tubes sets in the near-term and will give all competing tech a hard time. They have already released the 2nd gen chips and those chips are in products now.
It's true and it's also true that IBM did business with him because the CEO of IBM at the time knew Bill Gates' mom. "...you're Mary's son? Ok sure here's the goose that lays golden eggs..." So it helps to know people, definitely helps and it is what makes the world go 'round.
Doesn't it seem a bit vulnerable to have them all launched together? I suppose it's cost-effective but it with the nature of rocketry doesn't it make more sense in the long run to split the payload up into separate smaller rocket launches?
That paper is interesting but it could be developed more. Intelligence is tossed about but not clearly defined. We all know intelligence, or the measure of intelligence, is very conextual. It's not a new theme and there are so many counterpoints. This world is finite but he seems to suggest something infinite. The author has a lot more work to do to convince me that his predictions will come to pass.
Well maybe this time they can make a go of it.... I am not really inspired that it uses Flash/Shockwave technology. Is this just to push Flash/Shockwave? Or is it really the correct technology to make use of in this case? Or both? My experience with Flash/Shockwave on win32 and linux is that it's a resource hog. Go over to m-w.com and look at their real-time word search feature. It was hammering my cpu under windows and similarly under linux.
the truth? Haven't we matured enough as a civilization to be able to handle the truth? It's as if "they" think we're all scared sheep that will fly into a panic at even the hint of "bad" news. We have come a long way and deserve the truth. Plus it's just not fair that "they" get to know all the juicy details.
Yeah, great, you are preaching to the choir and you are posting to Slashdot. Way to look like you are practicing what you preach...
Interesting that you would refer to my post as preaching. I guess if the shoe fits, wear it. The point that you missed (wow, a/.'er missing a point) is if "they" are going to make it difficult to view "their" products, then just don't view their products. Make sense?
It's amusing that so many reacted to my post negatively. They will get their broadcast flag because they have control of the people in power. That's how things work. But if you want to show them who really has the power then put down the remote and don't watch their products.
How about you keep your opinions about what I write on slashdot to yourself? Go watch some TV. It has obviously sharpened your mind. The whole point is that if "they" want to make everyone jump through hoops to get at their medium then how about just turning the TV off. Do you see now? I don't think you do. Look what the TV is doing to you!
That's essentially what I was getting at.... If they make it so hard to view their medium then I'm not interested. This touches on something else too. I have little to no interest in celebrities. In person, most, if not all, are pretty run-of-the-mill. I think society is awash in celebrities and I think that their status is dwindling. Adding difficulties to view them perform isn't improving their livelihood and will probably have a negative impact in the long run as more intelligent people decide not to jump through hoops to watch TV/DVDs/whatever.
Seriously it's a detriment to your health and most of it is crap. Go for a walk or run. Take a hike. Go swim. Visit friends. Talk with your spouse or mate about their goals, dreams and fears. Talk about politics or religion.

I won't be the first time that a story has appeared here that made a false claim. Do you think the stories are researched first and verified?

"Man injured by 7-foot Lego grandfather clock that he built"
1. unplug from AC
2. Remove battery
3. hold power button down for 10 seconds
This has worked on many occasions on a T-20. I think this drains a capacitor that can cause the problem you describe.
But why not start a class-action lawsuit just in case.

They get accolades for reverse engineering, but others get....well okay I guess the building blocks aren't protected under the DMCA, yet.
is our genome protected under the DMCA or is that around the corner? Hope I didn't give them any ideas....
