VectorLinux 4.3 - Rocket Fueled Slackware

As far as performance, i have found gentoo linux to be remarkable. Everything is just zippy, although its been a pain getting my nvidia drivers working under kernel 2.6.9.
Granted im using a 2.53ghz pc... im hoping it will run almost as fast on my 700mhz G3 ibook.
Anyone have any experience with gentoo on a G3 laptop? Or would another distro be better for performance?
