2004 NetHack Tournament

bakunin writes "With Haloween here and gone, the fall NetHack season is open. The 6th annual /dev/null/nethack Tournament started at midnight, and will last through the rest of the month. You may wish to read the instructions and see what trophies are available this year before registering to compete."

    I tried to run Nethack once, but that thing is a huge resource hog! I mean, my computer isn't that great, but with a Radeon 9700 and 1.2GHz Athlon it could still only manage a frame every few seconds, at such low detail that it was only some 2D symbols on a black screen.

      There are few posts as on-topic as this one. Maybe a condition for mod points should be that the user has overflowed a 32-bit score variable.

    I personally prefer Ancient Domains of Mystery.
    Then again, I started playing ADoM, and I find it is MUCH harder to memorize the controls of one Rougelike when you have another's controls memorized. www.adom.de

    Though it _looks_ like one. That's sorta the point of the Clan EIT: it's an ironic _representation_ of trollness. Or maybe that's over-analyzing.

    At any rate: it's both on-topic and quite funny, but it's easy to see how someone not already familiar with it wouldn't think so. ;-)

      Nah, nothing so spectacular. All of the Slashdotters are just busy playing NetHack is all.

    I must be blind or something, but I can't find anything anywhere on the site that says how to actually win the tournament. Oh wait, maybe it's just another excuse to get together, play computer games, drink beer and get sloshed.

    I've not played it for years and first go I get killed by a wand of death fired by a water demon!

    What're the chances? I'd forgotten what a bitch this game is!

    Lot's of fun though :-)
