Software Tools of the Future

An anonymous reader writes "What are the sofware tools of the future going to be? It's an interesting question, with many facets. Here are some important trends in design and construction tool strategy, which will effect the kinds of software tools that will be delivered in the future. It looks at how to improve software development efficiency through visual modeling, generating code from abstract models, and systematic reuse."

Keeping some of the best tools in non-open source mode would be best; otherwise, the Chinese will have access to the source code.

Most people can agree that open source fosters the development of software, but sometimes in the interest of the West, we should keep the best tools secret. They can be sold as binaries, but their source code should remain secret. Further, the technology behind the tools should be secret -- safely guarded at American companies which do not employ Chinese nationals.

Ask yourself, "How would I feel if my tools were exploited by the Chinese to improve their weapons systems or their torture techniques against Tibetans and others?"

  5. you will always need software engineers. by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Troll

do you believe any of what you are selling or even know what it does?

The only tools a real developer needs are a Linux work station.

Us real engineers don't have time to learn your flash in the pan tools from a company that will sell out at the drop of the hat to next venture money whore who plunks down a million shares of useless stock from another worthless company.

You can't get away from the fact that lint, grep, gcc, make and all of the other command line tools blow away anything that your company could ever hope to sell. And they are free.

You will always need software engineers just like you will always need mechanics for your trophy sports cars.
Oh, maybe if you blow your engine you can send your car to Bangalore. It would serve you right for trying to put me and all my friends out of bussiness.

You people really use their crap?
Do you make any money? .net, it just cracks me up.
