Free IDE Gambas Reaches 1.0

A few months ago, the GPL IDE Gambas reached 1.0 release candidate phase, and now reader drfreak writes "Gambas has now hit 1.0 and looks promising as GNU/Linux's answer to Visual Basic. Now, if it ran in Windows too, it would truly crush VB for database applications. Check it out at gambas.sourceforge.net." A 1.0.1 release came out on January 3rd to fix a few bugs.

Do you people REALLY buy this? Do you have your heads stuck THAT far in the sand? You guys remind me of the RIAA - you'll just put your hands over your ears and go la-la-la-la and ignore what it takes to fix the problem.

I code in windows because I GET PAID for it. The problem with linux can be summed up in one sentence: It's too hard for the general public to get up and running on. And MOST OF YOU bear the responsbility for this. You're elitiest snobs that LIKE your little niche OS. You LIKE that hardly anyone uses it as a desktop. So you don't REALLY try to fix it. And then you pat yourselves on the back when someone comes up some GUI interface to something that comes close to stuff thats been on windows for 10 years - and of course you tell yourselves how NOW you can bash that pieces of windows into the ground.

Linux is and always WILL be a niche desktop UNTIL it's as easy to install AND use as windows. The linux community COULD have done this long ago - but you guys spend most of your time spouting off venom at windows which you have no one to blame BUT YOURSELVES for the state of linux.

AND here we go - save your BS line that it's already as easy to use OR install. Horseshit. And before you fanboys jump me, I am NOT talking about the server uses of linux - DESKTOP - because your little basic GUI is useless if there aren't DESKTOPS to run it on.

I'm not some sort of windows fanatic. I've been doing this longer than most of you have been out of highschool. I do what works. I do what gets the job done for my clients. The REALITY is windows desktops rule the countryside. The REALITY is if you want to make money, you damn well better be coding in windows (and again, save the fanboy crap - I'm well aware that some of you make money doing support and what not - that's not what I'm talking about)

This isn't about which is better blah blah - better seldom wins the race - look at VHS vs Beta. Linux is just like the Mac - the damn zealots are the ones that hold it back. Steve Jobs is the REASON why the Mac doesn't rule the desktop.

So sit there...take comfort in the latest little fantasy you've dreamed up about how linux is gonna bump off windows or steal all their old vb coders or whatever. MAYBE one day some of you will wake up and REALLY fix the issues that keep Linux down - but I'm not sure it CAN be done - there's money to be made by vendors KEEPING 14 different types of linux installs - and this HURTS the linux community - BADLY. I've been watching this go on for YEARS now - and I chuckle every time I read an article like this and then the follow up responses that ensue. Wait til you're out of college and have to make a living....*smile*..you won't be coding on linux. Not if you want to make money like I do.
