FBI Wants To Limit Document Searches
An anonymous reader writes "In what seems to be in opposition to the Freedom of Information Act, the FBI is seeking to limit document searches. It seems since now that a lot of documents are in electronic form, searching them is much easier than before, and for that reason the FBI is taking this action."
This is the classic problem of freedom versus security.
If all documents were open, terorists could abuse them and find out presidential itineraries and stuff. If all documents would be private, the whole point of Freedom of Information Act would collapse.
The issue is finding the balance and drawing the line somewhere in the middle, so that security is still decent, but freedom is still kept.
I don't think most people have RTFA, the FBI is basically doing this because their system is absolute crap and they just can't handle allot of searches. If someone asks for all documents containing the word "the" for example, the FBI just cant produce and then they get sued for withholding information. Obviously this is a giant PHB cock-up and the people in charge have no idea what's going on so they make some stupid suggestion to try and look like they do.
