Mandrakelinux 10.2 Beta 1 Toured
Anonymous Coward writes "The first beta of Mandrakelinux 10.2 has been released. New package versions and features include some changes to the installation program, kernel 2.6.10, glibc 2.3.4 and gcc 3.4.3. You also get KDE 3.3.2, Gnome, 2.8.1, and GTK 2.6.1. Mozilla-firefox replaces Mozilla, and you will also find gimp 2.2, cdrecord 2.01.01a21 with DVD+R Dual Layers support, OpenOffice.org 1.1.4, Postgresql 8.0, and MySQL 4.1.9. Improvements are also seen in the Mandrakelinux Control Center ergonomy, to ease the network configuration with a better integration of the firewall tool. OSDir tours Mandrakelinux 10.2 Beta 1 with GNOME and KDE in their Screenshot Tours."
I don't understand why they always release new version numbers for incremental improvements in packages.

Does this also mean it comes with Thunderbird to replace the mail?
:)
I like the idea of Mozilla as a whole suite of applications, that way you dont have to install multiple applications, when web+email are the 2 more popular applications. To each his own I guess, Thunderbird is rather nice and works with my exchange server (imap).
Also.
In the next betas, you will be able to copy all the CDs packages on your hard drive, so that you will not need the CDs anymore afterwards to install a new package with urpmi or rpmdrake. Moreover the installation will allow to boot from a USB key (if you cannot boot with a CD), and to save the packages selection on a USB key.
Nice, I actually took my cdrom out of my linux box but it has a USB port. Handy, now to test usb booting.
Even if you wanted too you cant order it from MandrakeStore as its not availiable , you dont whant to test a Beta its seems you prefer the final version for testing
Jacques Le Marois/Darth Le Marois is going to solve the problem he is turning the extremely Money making MandrakeClub into a loosing money project second cooker where you get to pay to contribute
Off course everyone who use Mandrake is on brodband

Holy Zoophilia!
Ok. I consider myself a somewhat open minded person but that was just down
right gross. Oddly it was just like a train wreck, I didn't want to keep
reading but I couldn't pull my eyes away. It just got more and more
disturbing and foul.
I agree with him on the intelligence and emotional state of dolphins and
other cetaceans but intra species mating and the thought of 'masturbating'
or performance of fellatio or cunnilingus upon a dolphin just goes a bit far
round the twist.
Although I did get a slight chuckle and head shake out of a few things.
First, the fact that the penis is prehensile and can be used to pick up and
carry things. I would love to have a prehensile penis that was between 12-14
inches. Think of all the things you could do. Like hold a piece of wood
steady while sawing it, or carrying all the grocery bags into the house at
the same time, or being able to open a door when your hands are full...
Second, that one should watch out when receiving vaginal(but he is not a
woman and thus is not sure that a woman wouldn't be able to take this) or
anal intercourse due to the fact that the male is from 12 to 14 inches long
very muscular and can shoot up to 14 feet. The danger here being that one
could get severe internal injuries that would be a bit hard to explain to
the ER doc. Gosh, no shit? I can see that conversation: "You see Doc, I was
blowing my dolphin partner and he got so into it he accidentally broke my
nose. He really is a good dolphin Doc! He didn't mean to do it! Really! He
doesn't have a mean bone in his body! It just sort of happened and he felt
really bad about it afterwards! Please don't report him for domestic abuse!"
Third, that one needs to be careful having one's face in the general area of
the genitalia or when performing fellation or cunnilingus on said animal as
in the case of a female dolphin a possible broken nose can occur and in the
case of a male a possible broken neck from the pelvic thrusts or severe
damage to the throat and/or face due to the velocity and force of
ejaculation. But that if one really wanted to do this just make sure that
the male ejaculates under water.
Cut to the Coroner's report on cause of death to the police: Fracture of the
C2 spine due to a mistimed vigorous pelvic thrust by victim's cetacean sex
partner while victim was engaged in oral copulation with aforementioned
cetacean. Death ruled accidental. Recommend that no criminal charges be
brought against the victim for being such a sick fuck as victim is deceased.
Or how about the poor doctor who has to tell the family: "Mrs. Jones, I am
very sorry for your loss. You see, your son's bottle nosed dolphin lover...
yes, yes I did say bottle nosed dolphin....yes, just like flipper...
accidentally blew a hole the size of a small casaba melon in his colon when
he ejaculated inside your son during anal intercourse... Yes, yes I did say
anal intercourse with a dolphin... Yes your son was the 'catcher' and the
Dolphin was the 'Pitcher" Mr. Jones... I can't say Mrs. Jones, I have no
idea what made him do that... Best not to focus right now on what you did
wrong raising him Mrs. Jones... No Mr. Jones it isn't for me to judge if
your son was a freak or not..."
Forth, he gives specific directions on how to stimulate and find a
'partner'. Including that one should really stay away from places like a
marine life aquarium as it is too public a place, the dolphin is not in his
or her natural habitat, and that people may object but it is possible if one
can sneak in at night.
Super. I can see it now "Mommy, why is that daddy in the fish tank playing
with the dolphin's birdie? You told me I would go blind and grow hair on my
hands if I did that! Will the dolphin go blind and grow hair?"
Fifth, that he curren
One important difference between Mandrake and other distros is that it's compiled for recent processors instead of the works-everywhere 386 target. Which in theory should make some difference in performance, but you never hear anything about that.
I don't understand about new package versions being a reason to call it a new OS (I know they have more, but it should even be one of the reasons).
Not trolling, but genuinly wondering, when they say the new version has "new $version of gimp, Oo.o, etc. etc." does that mean that they don't package them when they are released but instead when it suits Mandrake's release schedule?
# cat
Damn, my RAM is full of llamas.
It's a bit slow to boot and to run, and I don't like some bits of it like the control centre, but it's can be good for newbies...
That said, I tried several distributions (starting with Mandrake 9.2 and returning to later version of Mandrake) dual-boot when I was still using Windows, and Gentoo was the first that I actually used more than Windows. After using Fedora and Mandrake, I actually thought that Linux boot up times were inevitably longer than Windows.

Damn, my RAM is full of llamas.
And off course it has nothing to do with your setup and everything to do with the choice of the distribution ... cynical here.

New distribution , not new OS ... its still GNU/Linux.
Unlike Gentoo ( your distro of choice) wich as no paid developper to work on it and Debian wich release once in every 4 blue moon ( every 3 years ).Commercial distribution make a deadline and release whats avaliable at that time.
Also a Distribution release and what software are
available for that distributiona are two different things.
firefox 0.98 might be in the release , but once firefox 1.0 is out it is available for the distribution.

I'll take spam, eggs, eggs and spam for $200 Alex...
Exactly. I mean, if you boot Fedora or Mandrake into single user mode I'd imagine it will be every bit as fast as whatever your Gentoo setup is. Or if you turn on as many services on your Gentoo machine as comes standard on a default Fedora or Mandrake install then your Gentoo machine will probably boot just as slow.
Of course with Gentoo you get the leetness of needing to do everything by hand. But if you don't like the Mandrake control center, then feel free to be just as leet on Mandrake and do things by hand there.
As for Mandrake being slow, my guess is it's just the -O7 --ultimate compiler flag placebo effect of Gentoo.
Free will is just an illusion
Actually thats assuming that you can turn on as many service as is available on Mandrake on Gentoo , its not the case there not available.
Also , if you dont know how to setup a system , thats why its going to be slow to boot , on any system.
As for the Gentoo speed bulshit its already been proven to be just that bulshit.

I've recently tried Mandrake 10.1 and Suse 9.1, and neither of them could mount my ext hdd properly(160GB formatted with FAT32, tried one big partition, and also tried multiple 30GB partitions). When it mounted it opened 4 windows, regardless of how many partitions there were, and none of them could be read. Also, it would only automount when logged in as root. It took them long enough to make USB memory sticks accessible as User, I thought they would have been smart enough to make ext hdd's accessible as well.
I want to upgrade to GNOME 2.8.1 and Evolution 2.0.1 , but apt-get keeps reporting broken dependencies. I want to keep my Debian 3.0r1 install, but update those desktop packages. What can I do?

make install -not war
Is it my imagination, or are the number of modems supported actually decreasing?
Hurry Mandrake, before Gnome 2.10 is released!! :-p
There are more services availaible on Mandrake.
Service is two thing
a software wich start an action in the background so that you dont have to do it yourself everytime. Mandrake as More of those included in there Distribution.
Its also the term commercial company use to describe the work they offer you to support there product for a fee or for free ( as in no cost ). Mandrake also as more of those.
Mandrake as the most largest collection of software (790 000 availaible , mostly du by being rpm based and also being compatible with Red Hat , SuSe , Colectiva , etc
On Mandrake you have a high security default and a Military style default availaible , both of wich have no service started , Gentoo as no default or automatic security setting.
Every test that as proven Gentoo to be superior to Mandrake as been proven to be a scam.
- 2.4.5 Linux kernel in Gentoo VS 2.4.1 in Mandrake
when 2.4.5 availaible in Mandrake VS the one available in Gentoo whas used , Mandrake whas proven to be 2-4 time faster.
Gimp in Mandrake VS Gimp in Gento + some flags
When Mandrake used the same flags used by Gentoo again Mandrake whas proven to be 2-4 time faster then Gentoo.
Mandrake does have what all the other distribution offer and have and then some more that they dont , the others cant and whont do the same as Mandrake.
Keep spreading the lies about Gentoo , its going to bring back Daniel Robbins and the 20k he add to pay out of is own pocket because Gentoo user are more inteligent and work more and support more there Distribution then Mandrake Users do.
( I whas beeing cynical on that last part )
