I'm trying to inform you of the common arguments in this debate. There are many good arguments on both sides. That slashdot story had many good comments on both sides. NOT 'EVIDENCE ON MY SIDE.' The wikipedia page has good info, perhaps laid out better for you to read:
It is good to debate things, but to be a jerk about it (ie. MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!) is not good for debate, nor does it make you look like an intelligent person. (Even though that is Bush's motto.)
Put up, or be exposed as either a dupe or bald-faced liar.
Nor do comments like that.
If you have any dignity for yourself left, please stop.
Pointing to a 3042-comment Slashdot argument about something as if you were pointing to evidence is really disingenuous. Sorry, but I'm not about to spend the next week wading through it to try to find the claims you were making so I can check them.
What a newbie. This is one of the most famous/. discussions ever. If you actually read some of the comments, you will get good info on both sides of this debate. YOURS and mine. Better comments on your side than you have tried to pathetically present.
Notice how no other civilized countries in the world have people walking around armed with loaded guns (legally!). Nor is it allowed. But here in the US, Uzis, AK-47s, whatever you want is all legal to buy/sell/own. (Assualt weapons are thanks to pressure [$$$$] from the NRA of course, to extend the ban.) Guns show sales still go unchecked. Only about 10 states have any kind of laws checking records/ids at guns shows. (Guess who keeps pressuring congress from passing laws against that...hmm your friendly NRA!)
It's obvious you haven't visited Europe, or other countries for that matter. Then you see living in fear (fear of 'terror,' fear of guns, [the wrong] fear of God ('Left Behind' Evango Baptists) is what the US has become. Thank you for adding to this fear.
Before you say it, yes I AM planning on living in another country, moving in the next few years. Thank you and enjoy your guns.
There's plenty of solid research on this if you're interested (and willing to consider it, rather than dismiss out-of-hand any study that makes a conclusion you don't like.)
Yes, research funded by a group called the NRA. There is no other third party research available to support your claim. Sorry. I'm tired of arguing over this. You love guns. I don't. Agree? Okay good. Bye.
Pick your favorite source. This is common knowledge, a well known 'attribute' of Miami. Like I said, this debate over guns good or bad could go on for days. That is my point. Also, to say Texas is loaded with guns and safer than elsewhere is not the entire story. You have to take into account demographics. There are many factors to the equation.
If you want to learn about pro vs. cons of guns, look what other countries do. Look outside of the US at their crime rates/gun crimes. And see how they handle guns.
Miami has the highest crime rate in the country, and has for some time. And the largest amount of guns per person. Highest murder rate, everything. There are plenty of arguments on both sides for this debate.
When I was in China a few years ago, I saw people in banks using abacuses. Not to denigrate them for that -- they were faster and more efficient with them than the average North American worker is with a computer. (at least, that's my subjective impression)
I too prefer an abacus. Though I get weird looks walking around the grocery store carrying my shopping list and my abacus......
Also b/c they are a monopoly and have no financial pressure to change their ways.
Somewhat similar to the US Postal Service before Fedex and UPS came along. USPS had no reason to change their slow service, until the competition came along. The financial pressure made them change.
This must happen to Microsoft before they change. Right now they are raking in the money by truck loads, so 'why make any changes?' - is their mindset.
Consider biting the bullet and spending the money. $65k, depending on where you're located, could be much cheaper then the amount of money you'll have to spend on supporting Open Office.
OO.o support costs? Heck, I'll offer OO.o support myself for just $50,000! Limited time deal, contact me today only!
Make that modern synth sounds, or samples. Midi is just the on/off instructions, roughly, like a piano roll. Check out this new product from MOTU of sampled sounds you can use with a sequencer:
Why would you need to organize a playlist for each cd?
Music / Album and you have the exact same structure as on the physical cd (as long as you don't choose shuffle).
Oh, and in iTunes under advanced lurks a small menu item called "join cd tracks" which lets you choose if some tracks should remain joined after import. It's been there for ages too.
I don't WANT to join the tracks. They are not joined for a reason. And my collection is coming from already ripped cds. I would have to rip them into mp3s all over again in iTunes to make them work with the iTunes/iPod structure. My only option: making playlists for each cd. 20GB of mp3s is hundreds of CDs. It would take me ages to rip them again, and get them into iTunes the iTunes way.
Of course it would be rather silly to buy a shuffle if you intend to listen to albums from beginning to end, but that's just my perspective.
Yes, that is what I was saying. This feature is not made with classical music in mind. Understandably so, as the consumer base is mainly into pop music.
YES. And for classical music folks, iTunes/iPod is a nightmare (try organizing 20GB of existing classical MP3s onto your ipod- what a mess. You have to make individual playlist for each cd, pretty much on the ipod). CDDB is especially bad. I just turn CDDB off when playing a CD.
Not to mention iPods have a 'gap' in the playback- a short pause before advancing to the next track. It's not so great to hear a violin solo being cut in half with a gap, as a new movement starts. There have been lots of complaints about this. This flaw went unfixed in the new ipods.
And then putting an ipod in shuffle mode with classical music... Tchaik 4 third movement; then Brandenburg 2 second movement; Brahms 3 first movement; etc. Not really made with classical music in mind, but I suppose the larger market share is into pop music.
I say you can't beat good ol' LPs for classical music.....though they are hard to play on the go.:)
Gtkpod now works and lets you sync your evolution, or kontact calendar (and contacts) to your ipod. As well as put on/remove and manage mp3s. Mandriva 2006: ipod works automatically when plugged in as a storage drive, as well as gtkpod. Gtkpod seems to give a lot more freedom than itunes with your ipod. Check it out!
I think the many distros are the reason these companies want standards. They want to make sure their software will install and run on Gentoo, SuSE, Redhat, Fedora, Mandriva, etc etc. with no errors of libraries not being found, or missing directories. This is a good thing. If they want to have these companies' end goal software running on their distro, they will have to follow these standards.

Yes, the NRA funded those "studies." This is common knowledge. I had to reply to correct your post. That's why I replied. If you want more to read, here you go:2 29.shtml?tid=103

This is actually one of the best debates on the topic of guns archived out there on the net, some say.

Interesting analogy. So you're saying that we should disregard Linus' statements as political and biased?
