Open Source Message Queuing System

psicode writes "John Davies has announced AMQ, an effort at JPMorgan Chase & Co. to create an open-source message queuing system that can compete with proprietary message systems like IBM MQSeries and Tibco/RV. The announcement was made at the annual conference Web Services on Wall Street during Davies' presentation on February 1. eWeek has an article today with more details and some funny statements about Red Hat, SuSE and Sun possibly integrating AMQ into their "kernel". If JPMorgan Chase & Co. follows through with their announcement and they come up with a suitable open-source license, AMQ could become the Apache of messaging systems."

Bankers may not love proprietary systems, but they do have some nice advantages.

A system like AIM is not going to go offline for days at a time, and leaves the organization without the hassle of managing an extra set of servers.

And AIM might not have message queuing built in, but systems like DoorManBot allow the function to be added.

Then again, Open Source is always nice, but I'm for a stable system any day.

I am probably wrong, perhaps someone can fill me in as to how a these types of services meet a need that can't be built on top of HTTP (or are they in fact sitting on top of HTTP?) ??

Thank you people, today I got my first "-1 Flamebait" moderation. For no special reason :-P

Please mod the TIPC reference further down to page too, it's as much off-topic and flamebait as my post. It's even a plug for his project.

    Have a nice day :-)

That's not a 'funny' summary of the article, it's an 'insightful' summary. What is up with all of the MQ 'in the kernel' stuff ? And please keep me away from this guy:

"Even if AMQ doesn't get widespread adoption, at some point there will be a widely accepted open-source and free message queuing application that will continue to put pressure on the so-called ESB [enterprise service bus] vendors," Schmelzer said. "The software platform is rapidly becoming commoditized, and vendor startups need to be very cautious that they are innovating ahead of where open source is pioneering."

By the way, why am I meta-moderating 2 times a day and going for weeks and weeks without ever seeing mod points? What's up with that, did I quote a naughty word or something? I mean, I don't mind, but it's odd... it's been almost a month since I've seen mod points... and meta-moderating 2 times a day, I kid you not...
