Richard_at_work writes "Get it while its hot, or -- if you are less brave -- wait and see if there are any issues. Isn't it rather brave to wait with installing a security update...

Which is hard for me since my startup disk is on a FW HD.

Those permissions were probably incorrect long before you installed 10.3.8. And if they didn't hurt anything then, they're not going to now.

I think somewhere along the line a person had a bad experience with an update, repaired permissions, and things were okay. He probably posted to a message board, and people followed in believing repairing permissions is the cure to all woes.

If you want to keep believing that, it's fine with me. I repair permissions after most updates, but it's not because I believe there is a relationship between the two. The updates just serve as a reminder to do preventative maintenance that you otherwise might forget about -- and it occasionally does fix some annoying bug.

Mail.app was taking up to 2m to load up, now it is back down to about 10s! So far so good. And, um, I feel a little *bigger*, but it is hot in here.

Not that I'm doubting you, but *what??*

How the hell does changing a font fix ANYTHING?

That has to be the most non-intuitive (read: how in the hell did anyone even think of doing that?) solution to any problem I've ever seen.

You don't have any idea who John Gruber is, do you?

That's a rhetorical question, but if you insist on answering, the correct answer is "Someone who knows far more about Macs than you could ever hope to know if you lived until you were 1000 years old."

You, sir, are an idiot if you think repairing permissions before an OS update is doing you any good at all. You probably rebuilt your desktop and zapped the PRAM on OS 9 every week, too, didn't you?
