U.S. Denies Patent on Part-Human Hybrid

jimkski wrote to mention a Boston Globe story involving the refusal of a patent claim on a genetically engineered creature. From the article: "A New York scientist's seven-year effort to win a patent on a laboratory-conceived creature that is part human and part animal ended in failure Friday, closing a historic and somewhat ghoulish chapter in U.S. intellectual property law."

The Patent Office has patented all manner of business method abortions for years.

Now they refuse to patent a form of life someone actually prefers let live?

    I guess I just don't get it.

You fail lit as a life form.

Actually, I did quite well in Lit.

  3. Broader Implication: Taking the Profit Out by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Troll
This decision by the US Patento Trade Office (USPTO) was a difficult one, but it was the right one. By refusing to patent humanoid life (i.e. life which is not 100% human but is close), the USPTO has taken the profit motive out of these ghoulish experiments. The rest is up to our conscience.

Not so in places like China, which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong. Debates about cloning and chimeras never arose in China because most people just do not care. The first sentient humanoid creature will come out of China, and it will be used as a slave, an organ source, or target practice for Chinese soldiers fine turning their marksmenship skills, which will eventually be used to put a bullet into the heads of Tibetan children.

    China has no conscience.

Look at the tortuous debates in this country, the USA, over cloning. Even Japan had debates. No debates existed in China. The Chinese just do not care.

Nice to see - my faith in the Patent system has raised slightly from 'completely hopeless' to 'mostly hopeless'

right - it is nice to see the USPTO as a stooge for someone else pushing their agenda on us, isn't it?

it is exactly this type of abuse of the patent system that has stifled American ingenuity and allowed for the theft of intellectual property to become an accepted facet of doing business.

You're such an arrogant git. The fact that we HAVE conquered the planet makes us lacking in a certain attribute that a lot of other animals embrace: regard for each other.

How is it intelligent to go make holocausts, bomb the fuck out of iraqis and take part in ethinic cleansing. How the heck is it 'intelligent' to wipe out environments belonging to every other animal except our own.

    Idiot.
