European Parliament Rejects Software Patents

heretic9 writes "The European Parliament unanimously rejected the software patent bill recently put before it. Hugo Lueders of CompTIA, a pro-patent lobby group, said that the benefits of the bill had been obscured by special interest groups, which muddied debate about the rights and wrongs of software patents." Meaning, essentially, that the Conference of Presidents got its way.

It is wonderful to see all the arrogant US folk wet their panties when they realize just how powerful the EU has become.

And I say this as a US citizen.

Indeed. It seems that most folk haven't realized that the US empire has already peaked, and is now beginning its long decline. The EU is giving it stiff competition in the short term (witness the way the Euro is pounding the dollar), while in the long term China will eat it alive.

Well, after reading that, I had to sit here a moment and look around vaguely. Then I took a walk down the hallway asking everyone what they thought about the EU. Estimated reaction: "E-what?" 40-some-odd-percent : "Meh *shrug*" (or other) 40-some-odd-percent : "" whatever-is-left-percent.

After I explained how the Euro was beating the snot out of the dollar and fast becoming a world power, responses ranged from "So? I don't care." to "We can still wipe them from the face of the planet" (seemingly dependent on gender).

However, nowhere did I see any wet panties - erotic or otherwise.

I think I'll need to go against my gender response and go with the females on this "So? I don't care." And I don't. Most people don't. Even the ones who say "we can still kick their ass in a war" don't REALLY care. It's a pseudo-salve for their misplaced pride. But I highly doubt anyone is going to be extremely freaked out once the EU becomes really powerful. People just don't give a damn.

LOL.... you think US is in a decline, what do you think the Europe has been in for the past 60 years?

There was a time when Britain was actually Great, the mightest power on earth. And it wasn't all that long ago that Germany was producing the most advanced technology in the world. But you f00ls decided to bomb the crap out of each other. And succeeded.

You can get together and union all you want, your declining and aging population will ensure your irrelavance in the future. America will never have this problem thanks to the constant influx of amigos from south of the border. Viva America!

From what I know, CompTIA is a Computer Industry association - the same folks that you get your A+, Network+ and other Computer Industry certifications. At least that's what is says on their website and my A+ Certification certificate, documentation and little plastic card that fits nicely in my wallet and proves to some extent that I'm not talking out of the top of my hat when I'm working on systems.

The article poster, "heretic9" should be taken out an summerily flogged with a wet noodle for being disingenuous by trying to turn CompTIA into nothing more than a lobbyist organization.

Zonk should be tortured by reading old, fading issues of "Byte" Magazine for not checking the information contained in the poster's submission.

Oh, wait - I thought this was a website that above all else stood for accuracy in their reporting.
