Intel Develops Hardware To Enhance TCP/IP Stacks
RyuuzakiTetsuya writes "The Register is reporting that Intel is developing I/OAT, or I/O Acceleration Technology, which allows the CPU, the mobo chipset and the ethernet controller to help deal with TCP/IP overhead."
This is a complete waste of time. My latency isn't due to processing in my CPU. It's due to cable modem technology and all the switches the shit has to go through before it gets to me. Honestly, I don't see this having any benefit whatsoever except for special machines that deal with an extraordinary amount of network processing. Event then, it's likely to be near worthless since the server will undoubtedly be far more held up by disk access and other significantly slower operations.
I'll take any speed boosts Intel wants to throw my way but I think their efforts would be better spent elsewhere.
