France National Library Attacks Google Book Effort
An anonymous reader writes "The National Library of France is not happy with Google's effort to scan and integrate millions of books into its Web search. Jean-Noel Jeanneney, President of the library, wrote in an editorial that he is concerned Google's initiative to digitalize volumes at five leading libraries will reflect a unipolar worldview dominated by the English language and American culture. Jeanneney is pushing for European libraries to follow in Google's footsteps. Google said it was surprised by Jeanneney's remarks and noted, 'This is a first step for us; we can't do everything at once.'"

So let me sum up: you read "digitalize", your dirty brain immediately conjured up an image of something to do with a finger and an anus, you thought "wow, what a great joke to post", you checked the real meaning just in case, were disappointed to realize there's nothing dirty in this verb whatsoever, but decided your joke was too giggle-giggle not to post, so posted it anyway with a slight twist to include the proper definition?

I use degenerate because evolution does not mean creating new words for everything. See another /. article, about "spimming". That's what I mean by degeneration. It's based on erratic word creation, especially for laziness, in this case creating 'spimming' instead of referring to "instant message spamming". That is degeneration. French people are not stuck up. They study history and preserve history more in their culture. Of course the youth of the US prevents such an idea, because the only culture you'd be able to preserve is that imported 600 years ago from England.
French are not stuck up, they're more conservative on their cultural values. And I use conservative in a non-political sense.
France has a history to look back at, so far back in fact that many eras of it's evolution are still disputed by historians. That makes for a national myth that binds everyone together one way or another. There is no myth about the US, just a bunch of facts. Which might be part of why Americans are so damned materialistic.

The French are entitled to promote their own culture as much as anybody. You're such an ignorant bigot. Drop dead and do us all a favour.
Ah, but here's the reality: Britons and Americans (and Australians and Canadians, and Indians, etc) can all communicate with one another, even with minor branching of the English language. English is the Lingua Franca of the world today. French, whether because it refused to evolve as fast as English, or because France lost its geo-political influence after Napoleon, or whatever, has become a language of no real significance on a global scale.
No one is forcing English on anyone except maybe the pilots. You don't even have to speak English in the USA. Wanna vote in spanish? Fine, you can. As to American culture ifiltrating france: Would it really hurt that bad to air-condition your old people? I know the grave-diggers union is strong and all... Yeah, Yeah, low blow but the superiority air gets old. But look up french people, your language isn't going to dissappear! Some people are always going to learn it because chicks dig french and italian. German however may be fucked. It isn't helping anyone but Germans get laid.
