Google Announces 'Google Movies'

NW writes "Over at the official Google Blog, a new Google feature was announced - Google Movies. When using the 'movie:' operator in Google, it brings up movie reviews. At the first glance it looks like a custom search across movie review sites. There are also movie 'home pages' like this one which aggregate all reviews AND calculate the total score based on the number of stars. It looks like something similar to Google News - parsing all the reviews and it remains to be seen whether it will be expanded to something like IMDB. There is also no ads, probably for the same reason as Google News. The bottom of the page states 'The selection and placement of reviews on this page were determined automatically by a computer program. No movie critics were harmed or even used in the making of this page.'"

As far as review quality goes, a monkey with a spatula could give better reviews than imdb. There are several groups of people that try mess with the imdb scores. Some movies get 'hyped up' for no apparent reason, while others get killed just to get them in the top 100 worst movies. Just look at the detailed rankings on any modern movie: 13% of all voters giving a 10 to "the punisher"? Did 24 of the worst 100 movies of all time get made in the last 4 years?

I'd rather find a few critics that I trust than using IMDB as anything more than a database itself.

For several months now, IMDB has stopped ratings for new movies from being displayed until a few days after a movie opens in theaters.

So now, whenever i'm considering watching a new movie in the theater and I go to IMDB to check the rating and figure out whether it's worth my money, I get a screen telling me that the movie is still unrated. An idiot might take the risk and go watch it anyways, a lesser idiot (such as me) will go to rottentomatoes.com and check the rating there.

I am very disappointed by this and I do hope google develops this new service further to offer a viable alternative to the IMDB.
