Apple Backing Away From FireWire

farmdwg was one of several readers to submit stories about Apple backing away from FireWire. The latest generation of iPods no longer ship with FireWire cables, but instead use USB 2... although FireWire can still be purchased seperately.

Why bother with firewire for iPods considering licensing and complexity added?

I've gotten used to the high-quality digital transfers to the iPos over Firewire. Granted, the audio has lost some integrity due to its non-FLAC compression scheme, but that's all the more reason not to downgrade the transmission fidelity.

USB2 is good for joysticks, mice, and keyboards, but for my money Firewire is the best choice for quality A/V output hands down. I might as well listen to tape otherwise.

Whenever Apple tries to innovate anything they fail. They excel when taking somebody else's idea and mass-marketing it to the pseudo-sophisticate crowd who lap it up like sheep.

Or did you think Apple invented the online music store?

I'm seeing a lot of denial here. Nobody wants to accept that Apple is moving away from this technology.

Apple championed Firewire. They gambled on it. They were the first to use this kind of high speed connection technology.

But the gamble hasn't paid off. Firewire has not spread successfully beyond Apple. PC's have nearly unanimously gone with USB2 instead.

At one time external disk drives primarily used Firewire. Today they mostly use USB2. Firewire drives are mainly targeted at Mac users. They tend to cost more, as with other Mac-specific technology, because it is a much smaller segment of the market.

The writing is on the wall for Firewire. USB2 has won. This latest move by Apple itself, champion of Firewire, just further underscores the reality of the situation.

Mac purists don't want to accept that Apple's gamble has failed. They deny the reality that is in front of them, and comfort themselves by quoting specs, just like the old Beta VCR purists did.

But all the specs in the world don't matter when the market moves away from a technology. That's what is happening with Firewire.
