In Defense of gay marriage

Earl Warren once said regarding civil equality that "such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms". I strongly believe this applies to civil marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. Gay and lesbian people are just as worthy of the respect of the highest honors that the institution of marriage affords heterosexual couples. It would be unequivocally wrong to deny certain benefits to a group of people based on who they are. They deserve the opportunity of marriage just as everybody else and on that issue there would be no compromise. It is morally right to support gay marriage, as gay couples are not damaging to society or morality in any way. There is not a valid argument in the field of morality against gay marriage. Often people use the bible to back up their case and the fact that they think homosexuality is wrong. Who gives some people the right to give their morals precedent over others? If some of us are unfit to have a say in how we are governed, then how can other people govern us? The Defense of Marriage act, originally signed by President Clinton in 1996, is not constitutional and violates everything this country stands for. Gay and lesbian couples are being denied equal access to health care, that is normally afforded to heterosexual couples. They are being shunned by society because they happen to be in defiance of the religious right moral agenda.
The moral objections some hold towards gay and lesbian marriage are totally unjustified. One very famous gay commentator, Andrew Sullivan stated on his web site, that by permitting gay marriage "this says for the first time that gay relationships are not better or worse than straight relationships, and that the same is expected of them." This would not cause the collapse of the institution of marriage but actually strengthen it. Gay marriages are no less moral then heterosexual marriages and can be just as stable. The only moral objections that the opposition to gay marriage has are religious objections. There is not a stable argument that the other side holds in order to support a ban against marriage equality. John Corvino, independent columnist on independent gay forum, states that "is the Bible infallible, or might it contain some error? If the latter, how do we distinguish true moral teaching from that which simply reflects the authors' prejudices?". He makes an important point that if every bit of the bible is infallible then why is it not taken literally in its entirety? Certain portions of the bible are mistranslated and misinterpreted. Lets keep in mind that many millions in this nation are not Christian and therefore biblical guidelines do not apply. There is not one piece of evidence that makes the Christian far right moral standard anymore valid then mine, or that of any gay or lesbian person. Now I will discuss the defense of marriage act that purely denies equality and benefits.
The defense of marriage act, originally signed by President William Clinton in 1996 does not protect marriage, rather places arbitrary restrictions on gay couples. The newer defense of marriage act merely expands these restrictions. According to Dan Kennedy, of the Boston Pheonix, the 1996 defense of marriage act restricts gay couples from receiving "1049 federal entitlements". Many of these entitlements often are medical assistance for children who are raised by gay couples and other necessary medical assistance. If the defense of marriage act was originally intended to defend people, why is it putting children in danger of not being able to receive medical benefits? Why is it endangering the health and welfare of couples who are in committed relationships together? In order to respect the constitution and social equality, gay couples must be granted these federal entitlements just as heterosexual couples are. By denying them these rights, we are in essence promoting a segregated and uneq
