Natural Selection v3.0 Final

iethree writes "Natural-Selection version 3.0 final is released today, after several years in beta. NS is the most popular third party mod for Half-Life, it features a combination of RTS and FPS to create one of the most unique games out there. You can view the changelog and read an interview with one of the creators discussing the changes in the final release and the future of Natural-Selection."

  1. Changed a bit since I last looked at it... by biglig2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

... they've included a new combat gametype that is more like a standard FPS.

I wonder if this is good or bad... the learning curve to get in the game is what put me off NS before. Even SI is not that hard to pick up, but NS just baffled me.

I've been playing Natural Selection for a year or more now.

I used to play counter-strike constantly but there was alway ssomething missing in that game and whether the skill level was rising up or the cheat level was... I don't know but I got tired of the same old thing. Then there were the warcraft, diablo and superhero mods which were great but too little too late.

I found ns (found for myself) and I've been enjoying it. People say co (combat - team deathmatch) maps suck but I like playing combat after I play a lot of ns (classic - strategy) and every team I get on sucks.. I can still play the game but without worrying about how poorly my team will play.

This new version has problems though. For one it crashes about 2-3 times more often than the last version. You're very lucky to finish an entire game if it lasts over 15 minutes.

Second, with the changes to sensory chambers the game is very alien-sided such that the entire 6 hours I played last night of ns maps the marines lost every round and many many times they would just outright quit after a few minutes of playing when they saw it was impossible to win. (I rarely play marine because marines require a single good player to be the commander or else they stand no chance at all of winning and no, I can't comm)

In the last version if the marines had a good comm the aliens had absolutely no chance to win. I've yet to see a good comm with the new version so time will tell.

(whoever said it was balanced... well as much balance as they have is pretty amazing considering the task at hand but I don't think the game is truly balanced enough so that the only true factors are skill and strategy)
