Linux needs 2 things to make it on the desktop: ./configuring that.
1) A GUI that doesn't blow ass. KDE, Gnome and the rest should be thrown out, and a new DE should rise from its ashes. All GUI apps would need to conform to a strict set of standards to be used with this new DE.
2) Software installation that actually works. Something like OpenStep style applications that you can download pre-compiled from the developer's site and have it just work. No more Apt getting this, or
