Stem Cells Cultivated Free of Animal Contaminants
qewl writes "In a follow-up to this story, researchers at Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology have created a new method of growing human embryonic stem cells that has overcome the major obstacle of animal contaminants to their use for human treatments. As President George W Bush has restricted federal funding of this research to limited cell lines existing since 2001, scientists have strived to find ways to keep the lines pure. Irina Klimanskaya and colleagues at ACT grew the stem cells from the beginning on a cell and serum-free mixture called an extracellular matrix. "The importance of this work, of course, is that by eliminating contact with animal and human cells, you minimize the risk of contamination with pathogens that could be transmitted to patients and the population at large," Dr. Lanza at ATC said."
YOU JUST CANT FACE UP TO IT
The job of religion has ALWAYS been to keep us in the dark ages. Remember, it was because of religion that Archimedes magnificant works were lost for 1800 years (the pagers were even cut, cleaned off and replaced with religious crap for a prayer book!). Imagine where we would be today if we'd had his advanced knowledge hundreds of years before? And how about the whole thing with the theocracies preventing science and release of information about the earth revolving around the sun - not the universe revolving around the earth? Just think of all the advances and information we take for granted as common knowledge today that the "infallable church" once called heresey, executed people and withheld from the population.
Religion and the churches have done NOTHING BUT hold us back. Just as they are doing with the stem cell research. They are religious people. They are not scientists. THey have no business continuing to dictate scientific exploration when everything they believe in is based on a lack of scientific exploration and relies on ignorance and "faith".

I find it so amazing the lengths people will go to to devalue human life
Yeah, because Christianity has never done that. What with executing people who claimed the earth was round or that the we weren't the center of the universe. Stoning adulterers to death, beating children, raping children, hanging people for being black, making slaves, treating women like second class citizens, forcing children to bear the children of forced rape and molestation and all of the other millions of things is not at all a devaluation of life by those religious hypocrits, right?
Please stop calling things you don't agree with "propaganda."
Whether this makes you happy or not, the majority of Americans are not amenable to the idea of killing undeveloped babies for medical research.
This should not come as a surprise to you. Remember the national outcry when the cosmetics industry was using live animals for testing things like hairspray and eye makeup? Those were rabbits and dogs. These are human babies. Of course the public is squeamish about slaughtering them, even if it were for the best of causes.
When you add to this the fact that embryonic stem cell research is not a promising branch of medical research, the idea of using taxpayer dollars to pay for experiments on babies becomes a pretty hard sell. The only approaches that even come close to working are downplaying the fact that we're talking about undeveloped human children (the "it's just a bunch of cells" approach) and making false promises (the "Christopher Reeve will walk!" approach).
I appreciate the fact that you wish the government were funding embryonic stem cell research. Would it kill you to, in turn, appreciate the fact that most Americans disagree with you?
Bush hates us. He wants us to be sick. Stem cell research could mean a new dawn of health for the average person in the world. Of course since Bush hates the average person, he will do anything in his power to make sure that doesn't happen. Don't underestimate the hatred he has for you and your family. To put it bluntly, he wants you dead and wants to plunder what's left.

I just heard some sad news on talk radio. Slashdot troll Kevin "Klerck" Ealy was found dead in his Goose Creek, SC home this morning. There were no more details. Even if you didn't enjoy his homosexuality, there's no denying his contribution to Slashdot culture. Truly a troll icon.
