The Fate of The Free Newspaper

jm92956n writes "We've all become accustomed to the wide availability of newspapers and other media online, almost all of which is available for free. Today, however, The New York Times (free registration required; how ironic!) is running an article that questions the long term viability of that business model. Interestingly, the Times now has more online readers than print readers. Is the era of free news content about to end?"

The advertising model looks appealing now, but do we want our future to depend on that single source of revenue? What happens if advertising goes flat? What happens when somebody develops software to filter out advertising - TiVo for the Web?"

Thanks, AdBlock (and BugMeNot)! This article would have been much more annoying without you.

In other news, it looks like Adobe Reader 7 for Linux has been released. Direct downloads listed below:

    tar.gz
    rpm

Their website doesn't mention it yet, but it's there. Here's a screenshot.

Posting this here since I submitted this story but it will probably be rejected (as usual).

  4. NY Times betrayed Liberals and gays by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Why do I hate the NY times? Becasue they disgraced and shamed Liberal thinking people by being so full of lies and propaganda.

If you deal with truth and you believe in something then you expect that these beliefs should live on their own merit and be promotted based upon their truth and appeal.

The NYTimes is a mouth piece for hypocrites who pretend to be liberal.

The Homosexual Agenda has been a main reason that GW won the election. And I blame the NY times for that.

They are worse than the neocons. I expected a lot more from them.

They betrayed me and all of the other gay people who I know by presenting a fantasy world of gay marridge which only made other groups hate gays even more than they do.

It is easy to be gay when you live in a penthouse and live off a trust fund.
It is harder when you are an engineer and a technical person who doesn't live in the Manhatten or Beacon Hill fishbowls of trust-fund liberalism.

The drug addled 'liberal' media is not liberal at all. The NY Times is a mouth piece for trust fund privledge.

    They are discusting.

I am proud to be American. I am proud to be gay. But I still think that gay marridge is a fantasy. Most gays don't want to be 'married' to a guy. The urban gay is just a small part of the homosexual community. But they are the most vocal.

Is this story anything more than a trial balloon to see how the Web community might react to a pay-for-use system?

    You over estamate your importence.

The NYT is a "world class" news source, it is not on the same level as the Tacoma Tribune. If you want to read it on-line (and many, many, many will), soon you will pay for it, just like any other service . God, I hate free-loaders, they tend to be a drain on society, thinking that they should get everything for free just because they exist.
