Millions of Pages Google Hijacked using ODP Feed

The Real Nick W writes "Threadwatch reports that millions of pages are being Google Hijacked using the 302 redirect exploit and the ODP's RDF dump. The problem has been around for a couple of years and is just recently starting to make major headlines. By using the Open Directory's data dump of around 4 million sites, and 302'ing each of those sites, the havoc being wreaked on the Google database could have catastrophic effects for both Google and the websites involved."

    It just is.

It keeps getting harder and harder to find what I'm looking for. I'd say about 3/4s of the links it returns just redirect me to eBay or some assholes Amazon referrer link. If I wanted to deal with that type of sleazy spamming bullshit I'd just read a book review on /.

Are they doing anything to stop the googlebombing, scamming, and bullshit?

Because I see this bringing Google down eventually, if they dont. I mean, if their search doesnt work, what do they got? A cheesy freeware photo sorting app? Webmail?

Hi bigbloggingbuggar, I believe RTFA is a related term to RTFM. I prefer to think of it as "read the fine article". ;) I try to be polite at most of the places that I post (WebmasterWorld, Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Watch forums, etc.), but RTFA is a well-established piece of lingo at Slashdot, used to encourage people to review the basic facts presented in the submitted story. As part of blending in, also look for me to slip in references to Cowboy Neal, Soviet Russia, Natalie Portman, grits, etc. etc. I've been reading Slashdot for years, but I've only had the GoogleGuy handle on Slashdot since Jan 19th.

GoogleGuy, I would be careful if I were you. RTFA and other slang like "Film at 11!" may be the norm on slashdot, but you have voluntarily put yourself in the position of the mouthpiece of Google on this important tech forum and it is not appropriate for official company rhetoric to include profane, sarcastic dictates.

We know that prominent tech and mainstream newspapers monitor this site and sometimes quote its readers as the "official" or, at least, representative position of the open source community on various issues. If these publications read your comments and think they are official company policy, you can get in a lot of trouble for your tone. You may not be officially representing Google, but the distinction may be lost on outside visitors and the public.

By answering for Google under the SN "GoogleGuy" you have accepted some responsibility as a representative speaker, and I would definitely tread VERY carefully if I were you.
