BBC Writer Tries PC Repair, Finds Poor Software

twitter writes "BBC author Paul Rubens tried out amateur computer repair and wrote about it. All of the software was for Windows, and he finds what most of us do: "Most of the problems I've been called to look at have been caused by viruses and spyware, some by strange software [conflicts], and only one by faulty hardware." He then flames the whole world of computer repairmen as 'a bunch of unqualified amateurs.'"

The BBC is a a load of liberal tripe anyway. For an unbiased, pro-Israel, pro-American news source, I recommend Fox News.

So anyway, on Easter Sunday, I had the liver and bunions, an arguably passable meal. As usual, I have a few observations to make about it. First off, where was the bacon? I'm not sure, but I can tell you where it wasn't. Liver and bunions just isn't liver and bunions without bacon! Second, the bunions were not too good, much to crusty for my taste. Overcooked maybe? To dried out? I really couldn't put my foot on it, so to speak. OK, the first two I can forgive, but this last one really makes me not want to eat here anymore - my liver was like shoe leather. All chewy and tough and flavorless. I must have looked like a retard eating it. Sure, you don't make liver and bunions with Foie Gras, but I swear there wasn't an ounce of fat in my liver. I know my diet for the last 15 years has been pretty low fat because - hey, why would I need to store any extra energy? It's not like I am going anywhere. Seriously though, would it have been too much to ask for them to force feed me a few dozen sticks of fucking butter before they cut me off? You know what? Come to think of it, my meal sucked!

I know what you mean, but I have seen old computers that use the Intel 8086. They have been running pretty much non-stop for decades and their cases have never been opened once.

I was playing Jupiter Lander on my 22-year-old VIC-20 on the weekend. Still works fine, though I have to wonder why the game developers thought that Jupiter has a rocky surface...

  8. What's a good HARDWARE diagnostic for PCs? by Animats · · Score: -1, Offtopic
I have a PC (a Shuttle with an Athlon processor) that corrupts files, with single-bit errors, under QNX. This machine ran for two years, then stopped working right after a power failure. I've replaced the hard drive, the CD-ROM drive, and the boot CD. Reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS doesn't fix the problem. Even zeroing the whole drive with a standalone boot utility doesn't help. Setting the BIOS parameters to the default doesn't help. Reinstall of the OS (QNX, again) fails, complaining about some corrupted file, different each time. Sometimes it's a text file, and I can boot from CD-only, go in with an editor, and see a bad character on disk. It's a real hardware problem.

What's annoying is that the machine will pass all easily available diagnostics. The hard drive will pass a 12-hour surface scan. DRAM will pass hours of memtest. Simple CPU diagnostics pass. There are expensive burn-in test programs, but I don't know which ones are any good.

What's the best way to verify an intermittent hardware problem?

BTW, nice to see you're posting at -1 now. I guess what goes around comes around.
