America's Not So Up to Speed

indiejade writes "According to The Broadband Life, the U.S. has quite a way to go before catching up to countries such as South Korea, Japan and even Canada when it comes to percentage of the population enjoying high-speed internet access. 'In 2000, the U.S. ranked third in Net users connecting at high-speed among the top-30 world economies. The next year it fell to fourth. Now it's 11th,' the article said." Commentary on this is also available at Foreign Affairs and The New York Times.

Americans of my generation are suckers. They compete socially to see who is the bigger sucker -- I've seen them do it, bragging about who has the larger phone bill. They live "nigger rich" on cheap credit, both on a personal level and on a national level. Even the phrase "nigger rich" doesn't make sense anymore, because lack of consumer credit keeps poorer black people at least living hand to mouth; the amoral majority in the suburbs is living in a house and driving a car that they haven't paid for yet.

Broadband costs about 3 times here what it does in Canada, and it isn't as good. It's not worth the price. I hope my neighbors cancel their cell phone bill too, pay off their car and keep it instead of getting a new one, drop all insurance policies except those legally required, and generally return to the thrifty and practical nature that Americans were once famous for.

Damn, this is getting annoying. Broadband penetration is lower in the US - WE GET IT. It's been discussed EXTENSIVELY on Slashdot.

There's no need for 500 articles about slow XP-SP2 adoption or an article every Black Tuesday about new Microsoft patches.

Report the story, then SHUT UP unless you have relevant new details. The linked article didn't say anything that anyone who has read Slashdot in the last year wouldn't already know.

It's like a dupe, but more annoying. You've beat the subject into the ground. Give it up.
